Description
A gardeners’ favourite. Broad bean Aquadulce Claudia is the best broad bean for autumn sowing, overwintering plants on the plot outside, for an early harvest the following spring. Slender pods around 23cm long, are full of succulent white seeded flavoursome beans.

Freshly picked, small, young broad beans are packed full of Vitamins A, C and E. They are also a good source of protein and fibre. It yields well and produces tender white beans of good quality. Freeze any surplus for future use.

Grow Notes
Of all the broad bean varieties Aquadulce Claudia is universally recognized as being the best for an autumn sowing. It establishes itself quickly and can produce a very early crop. This variety needs the cold winter temperatures in order to perform so plant early in cool conditions and try not to sow any later than mid-winter as this will have a detrimental effect on both the quality and the quantity of the harvest. If the ground is frozen before sowing, lay and secure some polythene or other material down to warm it up.

These grow to a height of 100cm and 45cm spread. Although broad beans prefer a deep, free draining soil they are in fact tolerant of most soil types so long as they are not water-logged.

Sow
Broad Bean seeds do not require any treatment (e.g. soaking, stratification) before sowing.

The seeds should be sown 50mm deep with 30cm spacing between plants. Plant rows 100cm apart. Keep the soil moist, not wet or dry and protect from pests, pets and weather until they are established.
