A SOFT GIANT CABBAGE WITH THE MOST SUCCULENT TASTE NO MATTER HOW BIG IT GROWS! PORTUGUESE COUVE TRONCHUDA IS AN HEIRLOOM THAT YOU MAY NEVER HAVE SEEN BEFORE!

Description
This is one confusing leafy green vegetable, it defies categorization. Is it a kale, or is it a cabbage, or is it something in between? My nose tells me it is cabbage because when I cut into a fresh leaf it has a distinct aroma of fresh sweet cabbage and the flavour is more akin to cabbage than to kale. The texture is softer than cabbage.

There is one thing about Couve Tronchuda that is undisputed, it is the key ingredient for Caldo Verde, a Portuguese soup – practically the national dish of Portugal.

Caldo Verde is a deceptively simple soup featuring Couve Tronchuda, potatoes, onion, garlic, Portuguese linguiça or chouriço, olive oil, and water. This vegetable was worth the search!

As you leave them to grow, the fatter and juicier the leaf stalks become. The leaves and stalks become larger and larger as the plant matures. I think some of the largest ones on the plants got to be at least 18 inches across.
One of the marvellous things about those leaf stalks is that they remain tender for a long time – they are sweet and juicy, delicious eaten raw or cooked.

Grow Notes
Large loose-leaf plant grown for its fleshy cabbage style leaves best grown in full sun or part shade in well-drained soil. Cut heads before they flower to encourage more leaves.

Protect your cabbage leaves from the caterpillar of the cabbage moth by tying old bits of white cloth in a bow shape to pieces of stick or wire, add them all over your cabbage patch and other white moths won’t land as they see their babies will not have enough to eat as many other moths have got there before them – it works!!!

Sow
Sow direct or raise seedlings to transplant into the garden once established. Plant in Spring, Summer and Autumn at 8mm depth, 80cm apart with 100cm between rows.

Keep soil moist but never wet or dry.

Germination
3-7 days at 8-30°C
