KIWI FRUIT GOLDEN CHINESE GOOSEBERRY LESS HAIRY AND WITH YELLOWY GREEN INNER SWEET MANGO OR MELON TASTE SEEDS $1.50

The Chinese Gooseberry is native to eastern Asia. It was introduced to cultivation in the West some time around the 1900s, but was not commercially exploited until a name change and a very successful marketing campaign in New Zealand made it a familiar sight in fruit shops all over the world. The fruit we now know as kiwi fruit has hairy brown skin and green flesh with a centre ring of black seeds.

The skin is brown like that of the normal kiwi fruit, except it is a little bit less hairy. However, the interesting part of this new fruit is the inside. It has juicy yellow to green flesh with a mango or melon type taste, and it’s sweeter than the normal kiwi fruit.

Grow Notes
Prefers full sun, in moist, rich and well-draining soil.

It is necessary to supply a trellis as support for the plant.

Sow
Fill half of a resealable plastic bag with moistened perlite. Lightly push the seeds into the perlite and sealing the bag keep in the fridge for 4 months.

Mist the perlite as needed with a water-filled spray bottle to keep it moist.

Raise seedlings by planting seeds in seed raising mix, planting at 3mm depth.

Keep the soil moist, never wet.

Cover the pot with plastic wrap or a plastic bag to retain humidity and moisture. Place the pots in a warm, bright location out of direct sunlight.

Remove the plastic once the Kiwifruit seeds germinate and position the tray in a sunny window until large enough to transplant outside after any chance of frost has passed in Spring.

Germination
40-60 days

Maturity
Hardy Perennial.
