“Elephant” is a late, autumn leek variety. The vegetable is highly coveted by gardeners everywhere and can be a great guaranteed crop for the less experienced ones. It is often grown as cash crop, as it presents a very high market value and is coveted by chefs in higher class restaurants.

The long foliage is bi-coloured. White parts are approximately 15 to 20 cm long, while the top leaves are dark green. You can blanche these by adding rolls of cardboard to the white sections but they will grow just as well (though not a bright white, without any covering).

This variety has a typical oniony leek aroma and taste. It is intended for soups, salads, but is sometimes used in fillings and meat dishes. It can be stored in the fridge but for the best flavour and freshness it’s best not picked until needed that day.

Grow Notes
Prefers full sun in moist, well-draining soil.

Sow
Sow direct or raise seedlings in Spring, Summer or Autumn. Sow at 5mm depth in seed raising mix.

Keep the soil moist, never wet.
