Schoenoplectus mucronatus is a species of flowering plant in the sedge family known by the common names bog bulrush, rough-seed bulrush, and ricefield bulrush. It is native to Eurasia, Africa and Australia. It grows in moist and wet terrestrial habitat, and in shallow water. Used in water plantings and helps with stabilisation near dams and waterways. Also provides habitat for water birds. Is excellent in mass planted ponds and boggy areas.

Description: Tough reed, great for large pond/creek plantings.

Height 1 metre – width 500mm to 600mm

A clump forming macrophyte with lime/green triangular foliage. It flowers over summer with a cluster of seed heads near the top of the rush.

Prefers 70% light, no direct light.

Grow Notes
Grows in full sun to 70% shade. In shade it tends to grow taller and more open. Likes boggy conditions, plant in water up to 50cm depth.

Prune to remove dead material and to promote new growth.

Tolerates inundations, frosts and short dry periods.

Sow
Sprinkle seeds on top of damp soil, use a pot with a saucer of water underneath to maintain soil dampness. Cover with a light amount of sand, once germinated keep it in a shady spot with adequate water. Plant out into your pond or larger pots when it’s about 10 to 15cm.
