AQUILEGIA CRYSTAL STAR COLUMBINE GRANNY’S BONNETS WHITE FLOWER SEEDS $2.30

Aquilegia Crystal Star, commonly known as granny’s bonnet or columbine, is a striking cultivar known for its delicious white double flowers. This is Aquilegia is a cultivated variety of the Aquilegia species, which is native to Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. This particular variety was developed for ornamental purposes and is popular in gardens for its unique appearance. Columbines generally grow in woodland edges, meadows, and rocky areas.

MEDICINAL BENEFITS
Aquilegia species have a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, mainly by Native American communities. However, it is important to note that all parts of the plant are considered toxic in large quantities and should never be consumed without expert guidance. The roots and seeds have been used externally in folk remedies to treat skin conditions, sores, and insect bites, but internal use is strongly discouraged due to potential toxicity. Never ingest any part of this plant.

HOW IT GROWS
This variety prefers a temperate climate and thrives in semi-shaded positions with dappled light, making it suitable for cottage gardens, woodland edges, and mixed borders. It grows to about 40 to 60 cm in height and flowers in late spring to early summer. Aquilegia enjoys rich, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage further blooming and help prevent unwanted self-seeding.

HOW TO GROW IT FROM SEED
To grow Aquilegia ‘Crystal Star’ from seed, start by sowing seeds in autumn or early spring. Lightly press the seeds into the surface of moist seed-raising mix, but do not cover them, as they require light to germinate. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Germination can take two to four weeks but may be longer in cooler temperatures.

Cold stratification can improve germination rates—this means placing the seeds in a sealed plastic bag with damp vermiculite or sand and refrigerating them for 3 to 4 weeks before sowing. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and gradually harden them off before planting them in their final position in the garden.

Aquilegia grown from seed may flower in their second year, although some may bloom in their first season if started early. They are short-lived perennials but readily self-seed in the garden if allowed, creating a naturalised and continually blooming effect over the years.

Crystal Star is truly breathtaking!
