Please note that the main picture shows the larger ones so the details are easier for you to see. These are the small size perfect for vines, thin stems, roses etc.

Root propagation balls, also known as root propagation plugs or root trainers, are a useful tool for propagating plants from cuttings or right on the plant itself – called air layering. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use them effectively:

  1. Prepare your materials: Gather all the necessary materials including the root propagation balls, soil, a clean knife or scissors for cutting,  a rooting hormone (if desired), and your chosen plant.
  2. Choose your plant material:  Select healthy stems from the parent plant, making sure they’re free from disease or pests. For air layering from plants choose healthy stems you don’t mind losing afterwards once they are cut off.
  3. Cut your stem: cut a small section from the bark making sure not to cut too deeply. Look at the pictures to see how.
  4. Apply rooting hormone (optional): Spread some around your cut for air layering if you like.
  5. Attach the balls.: Fill your root propagation balls with damp, well draining soil. Open the ball and clasp it around the plant over your cut. The gently press the ball closed and attach the ball together using zip ties or even twist ties or twine. Secure it in place.
  6. Provide appropriate care: Place the root propagation balls in a warm, bright location, but avoid direct sunlight as it can cause overheating. Keep the balls consistently moist, but not waterlogged, by misting them regularly or watering from below.
  7. Monitor progress: Check the root propagation balls regularly for signs of growth. For cuttings, you should start to see new roots emerging within a few weeks.
  8. Transplant: Once roots have developed sufficiently for cuttings or seedlings have grown several sets of true leaves, cut the new plant off, they can be transplanted into individual pots or directly into the garden.
  9. Provide ongoing care: Continue to care for your propagated plants as they grow, providing appropriate water, light, and nutrients according to their specific needs.

By following these steps, you can effectively use root propagation balls to propagate plants from your existing plants.

AMARANTHUS MOLTEN FIRE JOSEPHS COAT SEEDS EDIBLE TROPICAL LOOKING AND A SUN LOVER TOO! $2.40

Seed Count: 30

$2.40Add to cart

Amaranthus ‘Molten Fire’ is a dazzling ornamental variety that lives up to its name, with brilliant crimson, orange, and bronze foliage that glows in the garden like living flame. Native to Central and South America, amaranthus has been cultivated for centuries both as a decorative and edible plant. ‘Molten Fire’ was bred for its stunning colour and dramatic garden impact, making it a standout in any flower or foliage display.

Although grown primarily for its vivid colour, Amaranthus is edible and highly nutritious. The young leaves can be used like spinach and are rich in iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, and antioxidants. The seeds of amaranthus species are also known for their high protein content, though ornamental types like ‘Molten Fire’ are usually enjoyed for their beauty rather than harvest.

This variety is perfect for adding warmth and contrast to flower borders, garden beds, and containers. Its vibrant foliage makes an eye-catching background for flowering plants or a bold feature on its own. The leaves can also be harvested when young for use in salads or stir-fries, adding a splash of colour to the plate.

Amaranthus ‘Molten Fire’ is a fast-growing annual that can reach up to 90 cm to 1.2 metres tall. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and is tolerant of heat and dry conditions once established. The more sun it receives, the deeper and more vibrant the foliage colour becomes. It is an easy-care plant that adds dramatic colour to summer and autumn gardens.

How to Grow From Seed:

Sow seeds directly into the garden in late spring to early summer, once the soil is warm and frost-free. Scatter the seeds thinly over the soil surface and cover very lightly with fine soil or sand.

Keep moist until germination, which usually takes 7–14 days.

Thin seedlings to about 30–40 cm apart once established. Amaranthus grows best in full sun with moderate watering.

Avoid over-fertilising, as too much nitrogen can reduce leaf colour intensity. Regular picking of young leaves will encourage new growth and extend the life of the plant.

AMARANTHUS VIRIDIS IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE SLENDER AMARANTH! USED IN JAMAICA, THE MALDIVES, INDIA AND OTHER CULTURES FOR FOOD AND MEDICINES!

Description
Edible leaves, it is cooked as a spinach substitute. The leafy stems and flower clusters are similarly used. Seed is very small, about 1mm in diameter, but it is easy to harvest and very nutritious. The seed can be cooked whole, and becomes very gelatinous like this, but it is rather difficult to crush all of the small seeds in the mouth and thus some of the seed will pass right through the digestive system without being assimilated.

Medicinal plant, a decoction of the entire plant is used to stop dysentery and inflammation. The plant is emollient and vermifuge. The root juice is used to treat inflammation during urination. It is also taken to treat constipation. Always consult a medical or herbal practitioner before embarking on any program of using a new medical herb. Some herbs should not be taken in certain situations, for example pregnancy, or for certain health conditions where adverse reactions may be possible. Alternatively, you may have allergies to an herb, or induce side effects from other medication and health conditions. So please do not take without qualified medical advice.

Yellow and green dyes can also be obtained from the whole plant!

Grow Notes
Growing to 30 to 60 cm high from seeds each year. The stems are slender with leaves being broad near their base and narrow near the top. Plant in free draining rich, moist soil in sun for the best flowers. Preparing garden beds with well composted manure will give the best results.

Amaranthus seeds can be either sown in pots or directly where they are to flower. They are susceptible to frost so be sure to sow only after the last chance of frost has past and the soil has warmed a little.

Mulch plants to keep the shallow roots cool in summer. For an extra-long flowering season, remove spent blooms and feed with liquid fertiliser.

Sow
Small seeds, sow at a depth of 3mm or mix with fine grains of sand if needed to aid distribution of seeds. Can be sown direct or raised as seedlings.

Plant in Spring and early Summer at 30cm spacing.
Water seedlings regularly until established and continue to provide water especially during dry spells.

FROM The National Library of Medicine : An Overview on Ashwagandha: A Rasayana (Rejuvenator) of Ayurveda – PMC (nih.gov)

Ashwagandha, scientifically termed Withania somnifera and belonging to the Solanaceae family, goes by the monikers “Indian Winter cherry” or “Indian Ginseng.” Revered in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine, for millennia, it serves as a potent Rasayana, offering a spectrum of health benefits.

Rasayana, as described, denotes herbal or metallic formulations that foster a youthful state of physical and mental well-being, amplifying joy. Administered as tonics to children and embraced by individuals across all age groups, including the elderly, Rasayana herbs like Ashwagandha hold paramount importance in Ayurvedic practice, particularly recognized as a “Sattvic Kapha Rasayana” herb. Notably, many Rasayana herbs exhibit adaptogenic qualities, serving as anti-stress agents.

Ashwagandha commonly manifests as churna—a finely sieved powder—easily blendable with water, ghee (clarified butter), or honey. Its benefits span various realms:

  • Enhancing brain and nervous system function while augmenting memory.
  • Supporting a healthy balance within the reproductive system, fostering vitality in sexual and reproductive aspects.
  • As a potent adaptogen, fortifying the body’s resilience against stressors.
  • Bolstering the body’s defense mechanisms by enhancing cell-mediated immunity.
  • Exhibiting robust antioxidant properties, shielding against cellular damage induced by free radicals.

In essence, Ashwagandha stands as a cornerstone in Ayurvedic tradition, celebrated for its multifaceted health-promoting attributes, making it a cherished remedy in the pursuit of holistic well-being.

Classical Uses of Ashwagandha

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine dating back to 6000 BC according to Charak Samhita (1949), has long revered Ashwagandha as a Rasayana—a rejuvenating tonic—over the span of millennia. Renowned for its versatility, Ashwagandha’s root is esteemed for its manifold properties, including being tonic, aphrodisiac, narcotic, diuretic, anthelmintic, astringent, thermogenic, and stimulant. Its name, “Ashwagandha,” originates from its root’s horse-like odor (“ashwa”), believed to imbue the consumer with equine strength.

Traditionally, Ashwagandha finds application in various ailments such as emaciation in children (especially potent when consumed with milk), debility from old age, rheumatism, vata imbalances, leucoderma, constipation, insomnia, nervous breakdowns, and goiter. Moreover, its crushed root paste alleviates joint inflammation and is topically applied to carbuncles, ulcers, and painful swellings. Additionally, Ashwagandha, often in combination with other herbs, is administered for snake venom and scorpion stings, as well as addressing leucorrhoea, boils, pimples, colic, worms, and piles.

Nagori Ashwagandha is hailed as the supreme variety, with optimum benefits derived from fresh Ashwagandha powder. Its leaves possess bitterness and are recommended for fever and painful swellings, while its flowers offer astringent, depurative, diuretic, and aphrodisiac properties. The seeds, when combined with astringents and rock salt, serve as an anthelmintic, removing white spots from the cornea. Ashwagandharishta, a preparation derived from Ashwagandha, aids in hysteria, anxiety, memory loss, syncope, and acts as a stimulant while bolstering sperm count.

Scientific scrutiny corroborates Ashwagandha’s adaptogenic and anti-stress effects, likening it to Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian Ginseng) and Panax Ginseng (Chinese/Korean Ginseng), thus earning the epithet “Indian Ginseng.” Extensive animal studies have showcased its efficacy in enhancing stamina, thwarting stress-induced ailments like gastric ulcers and hepatotoxicity, and bolstering resistance to stressors. Clinical evidence underscores its potential in averting stress-related conditions like arteriosclerosis, premature aging, arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, and malignancy.

As with any herbal remedy, consulting a healthcare professional is prudent before commencing any regimen. The information provided here serves as a reference and does not substitute professional medical advice. Always seek guidance from a qualified herbal practitioner or medical practitioner before initiating any treatment or altering prescribed regimens.

Growing Ashwagandha From Seeds

  1. Sow Ashwagandha seeds indoors in early spring to early summer. The seeds need a soil temperature of at least 21C to germinate, and the plants can take up to 180 days to reach maturity. Starting them in pots is the best way to ensure a long growing season.
  2. Fill a seed propagation tray or several plastic pots with organic, well-draining, nutrient-rich soil.
  3. Place the seeds in the pots, cover them with a thin layer of soil, and water them well.
  4. Keep the seed pots in a warm place but not in full sun.
  5. Ashwagandha seeds can take between 10 and 14 days to germinate. Make sure the soil is kept evenly moist until the seedlings emerge. You can gradually reduce watering when you start seeing seedlings but never let the soil dry out completely.
  6. You can transplant the young Ashwagandha plants into the garden soil when they are at least 10cms tall.

ASPARAGUS PEA WINGED BEAN PEA EDIBLE LOTUS TETRAGONOLOBUS PURPUREUS SEEDS RED FLOWER $2.40

In stock

Seed Count: 5
Quantity BUY THIS ITEM!

$2.40Add to cart

Lotus tetragonolobus, synonym Tetragonolobus purpureus (yeah, like that is easier to say!) also known as asparagus-pea or winged pea!

This is a unique and lesser-known vegetable plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. Despite its name, it is not related to asparagus but rather to peas and beans. Asparagus Pea is native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia, including India and China.

Origin: Asparagus Pea is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated for centuries for its edible pods and tender shoots. It is often grown as a garden vegetable in warm climates but is relatively uncommon compared to other legumes.

Growing from Seed:

  1. Collection: Allow Asparagus Pea pods to mature and dry on the plant. The pods will turn brown and start to split open, revealing the small brown seeds inside. Harvest the seeds once the pods have dried out completely. This time we have done that for you!
  2. Soil Preparation: Asparagus Pea prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Prepare the soil by loosening it and incorporating organic matter such as compost or aged manure to improve fertility and drainage.
  3. Planting Seeds: Sow the Asparagus Pea seeds directly into the garden or into containers if you prefer. Plant the seeds about 2.5 cm deep and space them 7-11cm apart in rows that are 30cm apart. Alternatively, you can start seeds indoors (under cover) in pots and transplant them outdoors once the weather warms up.
  4. Germination: Asparagus Pea seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
  5. Growing Conditions: Asparagus Pea plants prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Provide support such as trellises or stakes for the plants to climb as they grow. Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season, especially during hot and dry periods.
  6. Care: Fertilize the Asparagus Pea plants with a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks to promote healthy growth and pod production. Mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Monitor for pests such as aphids and caterpillars and take appropriate measures to control them if necessary.
  7. Harvesting: Asparagus Pea pods are ready to harvest when they are young and tender, usually when they are about 2-3 inches long. Harvest the pods regularly to encourage continuous production. You can also harvest the shoots and young leaves for use in salads or stir-fries.

ATRIPLEX FORMULA ORACHE MIXED COLOURS FRENCH MOUNTAIN SPINACH NEVER STOPS PROVIDING LEAVES! $2.30

In stock

Seed Count: 20
Quantity BUY THIS ITEM!

$2.30Add to cart

Spinach seeds have a high oil content, refrigerate until use to preserve freshness and viability. Atriplex hortensis, commonly known as orache, garden orache, or mountain spinach, is a leafy green that has been cultivated for centuries. It is known for its versatility and resemblance to spinach in both flavour and use. This mix contains all the types and colours available!

Atriplex hortensis is believed to have originated in Europe and Asia, where it has been grown as a leafy vegetable since ancient times. It thrives in temperate regions and can now be found in various parts of the world, including Australia.  Both the leaves and seeds can be consumed. The leaves are typically cooked or eaten raw in salads, with a flavour similar to spinach but slightly earthier. They can also be used in soups, stews, and as a substitute for spinach in many dishes. The seeds are sometimes used as a grain substitute.

Historically, Atriplex hortensis was believed to have medicinal benefits. It was used as a diuretic, to reduce fever, and to support digestion. However, its medicinal use is not as common today. While the plant does contain some beneficial nutrients, such as vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium, modern medicinal applications are limited, and it is primarily used as a nutritious vegetable.

How to Grow Atriplex from Seed

Atriplex hortensis is relatively easy to grow and can tolerate a range of climates, making it well-suited for Australian gardens.

Seed Preparation:

No special treatment is required before sowing the seeds.

Sowing:

Sow seeds directly into the garden once the risk of frost has passed.
Sow at a depth of about 6-10 mm.

Space seeds about 30-40 cm apart, as the plants can grow up to 2 metres tall and spread out.

Soil and Location:

Garden orache thrives in well-drained soil and tolerates poor soil conditions, though it prefers soil rich in organic matter.

It grows best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.

Watering:

Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and early growth, but avoid waterlogging.
Once established, the plant is quite drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering.

Germination:

Seeds will germinate within 1-2 weeks under optimal conditions.

Growth and Maintenance:

Atriplex hortensis is a fast-growing annual, often reaching maturity within 40-60 days.
Regularly harvest the young leaves to encourage further growth and a bushier plant.
If allowed to flower and set seed, the plant may self-seed for future growth in the garden.

Pests:

It generally has few pest problems, though aphids can sometimes be an issue. Regular inspection and organic pest control methods can help.

Harvesting:

Begin harvesting the leaves when the plant is about 20-30 cm tall. Younger leaves tend to have a milder flavour.

Atriplex hortensis is a nutritious and easy-to-grow leafy green that can provide a productive harvest throughout the growing season. It’s a great option for those looking to diversify their garden with something a bit different from traditional spinach.

FRENCH SPINACH IS PACKED WITH VITAMINS AND IS A VERY RARE AND UNUSUAL VEGETABLE WITH A STUNNING COLOUR THAT WOULD ADORN THE FLOWER GARDEN AND THE VEGGIE PATCH!

An indigenous plant from Southern Europe, it’s also known as Mountain or French Spinach, this is Atriplex hortensis Red Plume. The preparation and use of the young, shiny leaves are the same as that of, for example, spinach, apart from the much longer harvesting time. Great for stir-fry or as an addition to salads! The seeds are also edible and are best used ground and mixed with flour or added to breads or cereals.

Harvest the whole plant when 30cm high or harvest leaves as required. The leaves can be plucked the entire year, if they have not shrivelled or showing lost colour. The flavour is finer than that of spinach or Sorrel and contains many minerals. Cut at approx. 20 cm from the ground. Easy to cultivate and heat tolerant.

Ornamental wine-red seed pods make a great filler for cut flowers displays!

$2.10Add to cart

THE AMAZING ROOT OF THE HOLY GHOST OR BAI ZHI IS AN ANCIENT CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE AND COOKING HERB! IT’S USED FOR HEADACHES, NASAL CONGESTION AND HAY FEVER. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY.

Description
Angelica dahurica is also commonly known as Chinese Angelica, the Garden Angelica, Root of the Holy Ghost, and Wild Angelica, as well as its Chinese name, Bai Zhi.

Bai Zhi is a wildly grown species of angelica native to Siberia, Russia Far East, Mongolia, North-eastern China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. This species tends to grow near riverbanks, along streams and among rocky shrubs. The root of the plant is widely used for its medicinal properties and is known to contain furanocoumarins and angelicotoxin.

The medicinal properties of the Dahurican root have been dated back to Ancient China as early as 400 BC. Zhang Cong Zhen (1156–1228), a famous physician in the military, believed that diseases were caused by external evil factors, or pathogens, that entered the human body. He listed Bai Zhi as an herb that purges the body of any negative influences such as heat, clamminess, dryness, and cold on the skin. Today, the roots are used for other numerous treatments of illnesses such as headaches, relieving nasal obstruction, detoxification of the blood, as a pain reliever, an anti-inflammatory, a laxative, sedative, anti-fungal cream for skin, as well as treating swollen gums and toothaches.

The plant is very aromatic, so the stalks of this plant have also been commonly used as a food ingredient or have been made into decorative items. The seeds are often used as a seasoning condiment in food as well as a source of flavouring in liqueur. Another popular usage for this herb is its use in cosmetic products.

Grow Notes
Self-fertile, it blooms in the summer with many large white flower heads which are pollinated by insects. They can be grown under semi-shade or full-shaded conditions, and prefer moist, rich soils. Can be grown in containers. Growing to 1-2mtall. The plant usually has a brown cylindrical root that grows approximately 2–5 cm thick.

All parts of the plant are edible. The leaves should be harvested carefully the first year so as not to damage the main stem. The root is harvested in the fall of the first year or in the spring of the second year.

Sow
Seed requires light to germinate, along with alternating temperatures of cold and warmth, so place in fridge prior to sowing in Spring, or sow in Autumn for winter chilling, when the soil warms up, they will germinate. Select soil with good water retention and organic matter.

When planting, the row spacing of plants should be between 15 and 20 cm and should not be too close.

Germination
You can expect germination in 3 to 4 weeks if planted in Spring after being in a fridge, otherwise as the soil warms up after winter they will pop up.

Maturity
This is an herbaceous perennial plant, so it should grow back naturally on its own, year after year. However, it is to be noted that this is more reliable if it is prevented from setting seed by cutting off the flower before they bloom in full. Once established, Angelica can also be propagated by root division.

Mrs Burns Lemon basil (Ocimum basilicum var. citriodorum) is a delightful herb that adds a unique citrusy flavour to dishes. Mrs Burns is a larger leaved basil, it has more in common with sweet basil than lemon basil and has an intense lemon and lime flavour. It has scented leaves and lovely pink flowers and is as ornamental as it is useful!

Here’s a brief overview of how to grow and cook with lemon basil:

Remember, the best time to use lemon basil is when the leaves are young and haven’t flowered, as this is when they are most flavorful. Pick them in the early morning after the dew has dried. This is when they are at their height as far as flavour goes. Experiment with different recipes to fully enjoy the unique taste that Mrs Burns lemon basil brings to your culinary creations.

Cooking with Lemon Basil:

  1. Flavour Pairings: Lemon basil complements a variety of dishes, especially those with a Mediterranean or Southeast Asian influence. It pairs well with tomatoes, garlic, ginger, lemongrass, fish, chicken, and vegetables.
  2. Fresh Use: Add fresh lemon basil leaves to salads, sandwiches, or wraps for a burst of citrus flavor. You can also use it as a garnish for soups and stews.
  3. Pesto: Make a lemon basil pesto by blending fresh lemon basil leaves with garlic, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, and olive oil. Use it as a pasta sauce, sandwich spread, or dip.

$1.99Add to cart

ADZUKI BEANS ARE PERFECT FOR THOUSANDS OF RECIPES AND CAN BE EATEN WHEN GREEN LIKE SNAP PEAS OR LEFT TO DRY FOR CHILLI CON CARNE, RISOTTO AND SALADS. EASY TO GROW AND PROLIFIC!

Description
The Adzuki bean (Phaseolus angularis or Vigna angularis) is a Japanese favourite that can be grown for use as a dried bean, enjoyed fresh in its green pod, or even as a crunchy, nutritious sprout.

The plant itself looks similar to a field pea or cowpea and grows 1 to 2 feet tall, producing yellow flowers followed by clusters of cylinder-shaped pods that hold the red to orange beans. As an annual vegetable, Adzuki can be grown in any climate zone that has enough frost-free days for the plant to produce edible pods, about two weeks after flowers appear. A longer season — 90 to 120 days — is required to harvest the beans for dry use. Can be used as a great green manure crop since Adzuki, like most legumes, can fix nitrogen in the soil, making it available as fertilizer for later crops.

Grow Notes
Adzuki beans grow best in full sun in a site that has good drainage.

Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy while waiting for seeds to emerge and throughout the growing season. Adzuki can develop rot if they are waterlogged. Weed by hand seven to 10 days after planting, when the seedlings are leafed out, and a third time in two to three weeks.

This gives the beans an adequate head start, allowing them to shade out many weeds as the plant matures. Fertilize the plants with a low-nitrogen fertilizer when they are 4 to 5 inches tall and again when the plants bloom. Beans are relatively insect resistant, even those that plague other beans.

Sow
Plant adzuki bean seeds directly in the garden when your Spring or Summer soil temperature is at least 15.5C, for the most reliable germination. A soil thermometer can make a big difference in the planting of adzuki beans and other vegetables, particularly beans, which have seeds prone to rot when they stay too long in cold, wet soil.

Sow adzuki seeds 4cm deep 10 to 15cm apart. When planting multiple rows, space rows at least 45cm apart.

Germination
At 10°C Adzuki beans can take up to 20 days to germinate, while above 15.5°C, plants can emerge in 10 to 14 days. The temperature should be consistent for several days before planting.

Maturity
To eat adzuki beans fresh, as you would a snap bean, harvest the green pods when the seeds are just barely visible beneath the surface of the pods. Fresh beans should be ready to pick every four to five days. Let pods develop and dry on the vine until they rattle in the pod — from 90 to 120 days — to use them as shelling beans.

Cut down the entire plant at the end of the season and allow it to dry in a well-ventilated area for at least a week. The dried pods break open easily to reveal seven to 10 dried beans each. Store shelled beans in an airtight container in a cool, dry location until ready to use.

BLACK BEANS ARE ONE OF THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATIONS MOST VALUED FOODS! THEY CAN LOWER YOUR GLYCEMIC INDEX! THEY ARE REALLY YUMMY AND AMAZINGLY EASY TO GROW!

Description
Black beans are native to North, South, and Central America. Their origins have been traced to many locations in Mexico, as well as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Today, black beans are cultivated and enjoyed worldwide in many different types of cuisines.

Among all groups of food commonly eaten worldwide, no group has a more health-supportive mix of protein-plus-fibre than legumes. A single one-cup serving of this legume will provide you with 60% of our WHFoods recommended fibre intake and 30% of our WHFoods recommended protein intake. Legumes are the only food group that can provide you with such a strong fibre-protein combination.

A single, one-cup serving of black beans gives nearly 15 grams of fibre and over 15 grams of protein. It’s low glycemic index rating comes from the resistant starch content of black beans. On the protein front, recent studies show black beans to contain unique peptide components (small sequences of amino acids that are used to form proteins) that further improve regulation of blood sugar and insulin levels.

These seeds are 100% organic with no pesticides, treatments or artificial fertilizers used in their production. They are farmed locally. Usually, these peas might be sprayed with something to get rid of pests and heat treated before sale to the public, that will often kill the living part of the seed, so you need to get untreated seed to grow these.

Grow Notes
Once established Black beans don’t need as much water. Only water them when the soil is dry, or they appear wilted. Black beans are incredibly easy to take care of, they are kind of no-nonsense plants. Plant them direct, water them occasionally, give them sunshine and they’ll grow without any additional help. You can grow these in the ground or in containers – both are great!

Sow
Black bean seeds germinate more easily if you prep them by soaking them for a few hours or overnight. Soak your beans in clean water for at least 2 hours before planting. Plant with eyes facing downwards, 2.5cm deep, in a sunny spot once the soil temp reaches 15°C in Spring. Space 10-15cms apart and keep soil moist as they begin to sprout and while young.

Germination
Your beans should germinate in 10-14 days.

Maturity
They will reach maturity in about 100 days.

THE FANTASTIC AND VERSATILE BORLOTTI BEAN! THESE STRIPED WONDERS LEND THEMSELVES TO MILLIONS OF USES! SOUPS, STEWS, SALADS, BAKED BEANS, TACOS, VEGGIE BURGERS, DIPS, CURRIES, ETC, ETC! GREAT FIBRE CONTENT TO MAKE YOU FEEL FULLER! 12 LARGE SEEDS, STRIPED, EASY TO SEE AND HANDLE. EACH BEAN SEED PRODUCES A FEW KILOS OF BEANS AND MAYBE MORE!

Description
Borlotti beans, also known as cranberry beans, are a medium-sized bean with unsurpassed versatility. Borlotti beans have a mild nutty flavour, a natural savoury aroma and a creamy texture when cooked. These red striped beans are delectable in savoury dishes. They pair with subtle Indian flavours or hotter spices equally well and are great in vegetarian recipes.

Borlotti beans should be pre-soak in plenty of cold water (in a large bowl with room for beans to double in size) for a minimum of 4 hours before cooking. This removes the naturally occurring Lectin and Saponin found in many pulses, which can impede digestion. Drain, rinse well and place beans in a pot of cold water, 1:2. Bring to the boil then reduce heat and simmer for about 30 minutes or until tender. Do not add salt while cooking, as this can make outer skins of legumes tough. Drain and use or refrigerate for up to 2 days.

Yummy cooked Borlotti beans can be chilled and added to salads or used hot in hearty soups and hotpots. They are particularly good in curries and spiced dishes; try cumin and coriander seeds with freshly grated turmeric and ginger or add chilli for extra zing. Red Borlotti beans are also wonderful refried in Mexican burritos and enchiladas.

Left-over spicy beans are a scrumptious topper for baked potatoes with grated cheese or sour cream. These beans are a delicious ingredient for vegetarian burgers, while smashed Borlotti beans are great in dips; mix with spicy salsa and serve with avocado and crackers.

These are easy and fun to grow! Kids love their bright pods and striped beans!

Grow Notes
These are climbing beans so the vines will need a medium to climb over; trellis, A-frame or fence are all popular solutions.

Pick regularly to encourage more growth. Pods are best eaten when young and tender. Let pods fully mature if growing for dried beans.

Sow
Sow direct at 20mm depth spaced 15cms apart in Spring and Summer. Rows should be spaced 100cm apart and be in full sun, with well-drained soil.

Germination

FOR THE EARLIEST BROAD BEANS SOW AQUADULCE CLAUDIA!

Description
A gardeners’ favourite. Broad bean Aquadulce Claudia is the best broad bean for autumn sowing, overwintering plants on the plot outside, for an early harvest the following spring. Slender pods around 23cm long, are full of succulent white seeded flavoursome beans.

Freshly picked, small, young broad beans are packed full of Vitamins A, C and E. They are also a good source of protein and fibre. It yields well and produces tender white beans of good quality. Freeze any surplus for future use.

Grow Notes
Of all the broad bean varieties Aquadulce Claudia is universally recognized as being the best for an autumn sowing. It establishes itself quickly and can produce a very early crop. This variety needs the cold winter temperatures in order to perform so plant early in cool conditions and try not to sow any later than mid-winter as this will have a detrimental effect on both the quality and the quantity of the harvest. If the ground is frozen before sowing, lay and secure some polythene or other material down to warm it up.

These grow to a height of 100cm and 45cm spread. Although broad beans prefer a deep, free draining soil they are in fact tolerant of most soil types so long as they are not water-logged.

Sow
Broad Bean seeds do not require any treatment (e.g. soaking, stratification) before sowing.

The seeds should be sown 50mm deep with 30cm spacing between plants. Plant rows 100cm apart. Keep the soil moist, not wet or dry and protect from pests, pets and weather until they are established.

Germination
7-14 days at 6-24°C

$1.50Add to cart

The Great Northern Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is a classic heirloom bean that has been grown in North and Central America for hundreds of years. It is thought to have descended from beans first cultivated by Indigenous peoples before spreading throughout North America, where it became a staple crop. Named for its popularity in the northern United States, the Great Northern Bean is prized for its mild flavour, creamy texture, and excellent storage qualities.

Nutrients and Edibility
Great Northern Beans are an excellent source of plant-based protein, dietary fibre, iron, folate, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and B vitamins. They are naturally low in fat, cholesterol free, and rich in complex carbohydrates, making them a healthy and satisfying food. The dried beans have a delicate, slightly nutty flavour and a smooth, creamy texture when cooked. They are perfect for soups, casseroles, baked bean dishes, stews, salads, and slow-cooked meals. Like all dried beans, they should be thoroughly cooked before eating.

Interesting Uses
Great Northern Beans are one of the most versatile beans in the kitchen. Their mild flavour allows them to absorb herbs, spices, and seasonings beautifully, making them a favourite in Mediterranean, American, and European cooking. The plants also improve soil health by fixing nitrogen, making them an excellent crop for vegetable rotations.

How it Grows
Great Northern Beans are usually grown as a bush bean, reaching around 45–60 cm in height. They produce clusters of white flowers followed by slender green pods filled with creamy white beans. The plants are productive, easy to grow, and mature relatively quickly, making them an excellent choice for home gardeners. They grow best in warm weather and require full sun and well-drained soil.

How to Grow From Seed:

Sow seeds directly into the garden after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.

Plant seeds 2–3 cm deep and space them about 10–15 cm apart, leaving 45–60 cm between rows.

Keep the soil evenly moist during germination, which usually occurs within 7–10 days.

Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly, especially during flowering and pod development, but avoid over watering.

Harvest young pods if you wish to eat them as green beans, or leave the pods on the plant until they turn brown and dry for harvesting mature beans. Once harvested, allow the beans to dry completely before storing them in an airtight container.

LABLAB BEAN IS A GOOD CHOICE FOR A QUICK SCREEN ON A TRELLIS OR FENCE. IT GROWS FAST, HAS BEAUTIFUL, FRAGRANT FLOWERS THAT ATTRACT BUTTERFLIES AND NECTAR FEEDING BIRDS AND IS EDIBLE! ALSO A COVER CROP OR FORAGE ADDITION PLANT!

Description
Lab Lab Bean – Highworth is a vigorous creeping annual (or bi-annual in warmer areas) well suited to hot humid climates over the wet season. Also known as Dolichos or Hyacinth bean, this is a prolific cropper of yummy purple popped beans which can be eaten when young if cooked. The delicious flowers are best eaten raw as an addition to your salads. Mature seeds must be boiled before eating to break down a toxic cyanogenic glycoside in their coat.

As a green manure cover crop it produces an excellent ground cover with large amounts of organic matter, nitrogen and legumes.

It can be sown with summer grasses (e.g. Forage sorghum) to provide mixed forage system. Can be grazed or harvested for hay. It is commonly used in mixed cropping-livestock systems in northern Australia and as a legume ley in sugar cane systems to address soil fertility decline.

Grow Notes
Lablab requires a sunny position where it’ll thrive in a wide range of soils, from poor sandy soils to heavy clays, when drainage is good. Lablab tolerates some flooding but does not withstand poor drainage or prolonged waterlogging for extended periods. Thanks to its taproot, lablab can extract water from 2 m below the soil surface, which makes it drought hardy and allows it to grow during the drier periods of the year.

These are climbing beans so the vines will need a medium to climb over; trellis, A-frame or fence are all popular solutions if you are eating them as opposed to using them for a cover crop or grazing bean.

Sow
Sow direct at 20mm depth spaced 10cms apart in Autumn or Winter in northern Australia, or Autumn/Spring in Southern areas in order to achieve the temperatures required for germination. Rows should be spaced 50cm apart and be in full sun, with well-drained soil.

Keep soil moist but never wet or dry.

Germination
6-10 days at 16-30°C

Maturity
55 days to maturity.

BEANS MUNG VIGNA RADIATA HEIRLOOM 4000 YEARS OF HISTORY RICH IN NUTRIENTS $2.30

Seed Count: 100
Quantity BUY THIS ITEM!

$2.30Add to cart

Mung beans, known scientifically as Vigna radiata, are an ancient legume that has been cultivated for more than 4,000 years. They originated in India, where they became an important food crop and were later spread throughout Asia, particularly into China and Southeast Asia, before reaching other parts of the world. Today they are grown widely in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of Australia, as they thrive in warm climates and produce quickly.

Medicinally, mung beans have long been regarded as highly beneficial. They are rich in protein, fibre, folate, iron, magnesium, and antioxidants. In traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, mung beans are considered cooling to the body, often used to reduce heat-related conditions such as fevers, inflammation, and high blood pressure. They support digestion, promote heart health, and help regulate blood sugar due to their low glycaemic index. Their antioxidant compounds, including flavonoids and phenolic acids, assist in protecting cells from oxidative stress and may support overall immunity.

One of the most popular uses of mung beans is for sprouting. Mung bean sprouts are a staple in many Asian cuisines and are valued not only for their crisp, refreshing texture but also for their dense concentration of nutrients. Sprouts are especially high in vitamin C, which is absent in the dried seed, and the sprouting process makes the beans easier to digest while increasing the bio-availability of many minerals. They are commonly used in salads, stir-fries, soups, and sandwiches.

How to grow from seed:

To grow mung beans from seed in Australia, plant them in late spring through summer when the soil has warmed, as they need consistent warmth to germinate and grow well.

Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil and sow seeds about 2 to 4 centimetres deep, spacing them around 10 centimetres apart.

Mung beans germinate quickly, often within four to seven days, and grow into bushy plants that fix nitrogen in the soil, making them excellent for crop rotation.

They require regular watering but should not be waterlogged, and they mature in about 90 days, producing slender pods containing the small green beans.

For sprouting, mung beans are grown very differently. Simply place a small amount of dried mung beans in a jar or sprouter (we have a choice of two sprouters in stock), rinse them thoroughly, and soak them overnight in clean water. The next day, drain and rinse the beans, keeping them in a dark, well-ventilated place. Rinse and drain twice daily, and within three to five days the beans will develop crisp, white sprouts ready for eating. Sprouts should be consumed fresh and stored in the fridge once harvested.

Mung beans and their sprouts are both easy to grow and highly nutritious, making them a valuable addition to the home garden and kitchen, offering a fast and versatile way to boost health through natural, plant-based food!

BLACK EYED PEAS! FIXES NITROGEN AND DELIVERS IT BACK TO YOUR SOIL WHILE PRODUCING TONNES OF DELICIOUS SNAP PEAS TO PICK AND THEN FINALLY THE BEANS MATURE AND CAN BE USED FOR SOUPS AND ALL YOUR RECIPES! SOMETIMES CALLED BLACK EYED BEANS, THESE HAVE BEEN TAGGED BEANS BLACK EYED.

Black-eyed peas are associated with the U.S. South and especially as a symbol of good luck on New Year’s Day. However, black-eyed peas are certainly not exclusive to the Southern states.

In fact, they are grown worldwide. Dozens of black-eyed pea varieties exist, some are old heirlooms and others are currently being bred for different qualities. The most commonly grown type is these – California Blackeye; the buff-coloured beans with a black dot in the curve.

History and Overview

Black-eyed peas are a type of cowpea and are closely related to the asparagus bean. They have been grown since colonial times in the United States. Black-eyed peas, as with all legumes, fix nitrogen in their roots, leaving it in the soil for the following vegetable planted in its place. You get a delicious vegetable and a fertilizer, all in one.

They’re called “Black-eyed” because of the prominent black dot where the bean was joined to the pod. Despite this quirk, black-eyed peas are grown the same as other legumes and are actually closer to a bean than a pea. And despite the name, the eye can be a different colour altogether, although they tend to turn a shade of purple when cooked.

The leaves of the black-eyed pea plant are the familiar pointed, heart-shape common to beans. They grow alternately and can be smooth or fuzzy. Some varieties will have a tinge of purple to the stems. The flowers can be white or shades of yellow, pink, or purple. They are only open for one day, but they’re very attractive to pollinating insects.

Grow Notes
Prefers full sun in moist, well-draining soil.

It is necessary to supply a trellis or alternate structure as support for the plant.

Sow
Sow direct in late Summer, Autumn or Spring, planting seeds at a depth of 20mm with 10cm plant spacing and 50cm row spacing.

Keep soil moist, not wet.

Germination
7-30 days at 10-25°C

Maturity

Description
From Wikipedia:

The rattlesnake bean is an heirloom cultivar of pole bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The pods are 6 to 8-inches long with purple markings, and the seeds are light brown with brown markings, still visible after cooking. They are named for the snake-like manner in which their pods coil around the vine.[1]

Rattlesnake beans favour hot weather such as in American Southeast and mid-Atlantic, though they are easy to grow elsewhere as well. They have an average to long time from germination to harvest, ranging from 60 to 90 days.[2] They should be harvested frequently for increased yields. Plant grows up to ten feet, producing purple flowers before the pods.[3][4]

As fresh snap beans, they are sweet-tasting.[2] Cooked dry beans have an intense flavour that combines well with strong spices, making them suitable for chili con carne.[5]

Grow Notes
Plant in late Spring or early Summer. Sow directly into a rich soil and keep mulched to improve water retention. When sowing do not allow soil to get too wet as beans can rot.

ONE OF THE OLDEST RUNNER BEANS IN ITS TRUE FORM IN EXISTANCE. SCARLET RUNNER SEVEN YEAR BEAN! THE SCARLET EMPORER BEAN! THE KING OF THE BEANPOLE! THIS ONE FORMS A TUBER AND THEN KEEPS GROWING EVERY YEAR UP TO SEVEN YEARS! BOMB PROOF GROWING!

One of the oldest runner beans still grown today, the Scarlet Emperor was first recorded in 1750 and originally hails from the highlands of Guatemala and Mexico. It became a favourite in English gardens right up until the late 1800s—and it’s easy to see why!

This is a bean with personality. It climbs like it’s on a mission, so make sure you give it room to roam—a trellis, fence or pole will do nicely. In return, you’ll be rewarded with a lush screen of emerald green leaves, vibrant scarlet-orange flowers, and plenty of delicious beans. It’s fast-growing, low-maintenance, and utterly beautiful—a real showstopper in any veggie patch or flower garden.

The beans themselves? Young pods are tender, tasty, and full of flavour, perfect as snaps or sliced into stir-fries. Once dried, the seeds inside range in colour from vivid pink to purple-streaked lilac—stunning raw, although the colour sadly fades when cooked. The plump 6–8 inch pods aren’t as uniform as modern hybrids, but their rich, savoury taste more than makes up for it.

If you need a bit of summertime privacy, plant a few Scarlet Runners and let them do the heavy lifting—fast. All they ask is a bit of weeding early on, and then they’ll thrive with very little care. With their ornamental beauty and edible bounty, Scarlet Runner Beans bring joy, flavour, and a touch of drama to any garden.

How to Grow Scarlet Runner Beans from Seed

Sow seeds directly where you want them to grow, as Scarlet Runner Beans don’t transplant well. Wait until the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up—usually in late spring to early summer in most parts of Australia.

Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. These beans love a trellis, fence, or teepee to climb, so have your support in place before sowing.

Sowing Depth: 2–3 cm
Spacing: 10–15 cm between seeds; rows about 60 cm apart
Germination Time: 7–14 days
Watering: Keep soil moist (but not soggy) while seeds germinate. Once established, water regularly, especially during flowering and pod development.

Scarlet Runner Beans grow quickly, so keep young plants weed-free until they take off. Mulching helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool.

For best eating, harvest the pods while they’re still young and tender. You can also let some mature on the vine to dry and collect the beautiful seeds.

These beans also love cooler nights, so they thrive in temperate and subtropical climates—perfect for many parts of Australia.

BEANS SOY SOYA BEAN GLYCINE MAX BEST SOURCE PLANT BASED PROTEIN EASY GROWERS! $2.10

Description
From Wikipedia: The soybean, soy bean, or soya bean (Glycine max)[3] is a species of legume native to East Asia, widely grown for its edible bean, which has numerous uses.

Traditional unfermented food uses of soybeans include soy milk, from which tofu and tofu skin are made. Fermented soy foods include soy sauce, fermented bean paste, natt, and tempeh. Fat-free (defatted) soybean meal is a significant and cheap source of protein for animal feeds and many packaged meals. For example, soybean products, such as textured vegetable protein (TVP), are ingredients in many meat and dairy substitutes.[4]

Soy beans contain significant amounts of phytic acid, dietary minerals and B vitamins. Soy vegetable oil, used in food and industrial applications, is another product of processing the soybean crop. Soybean is the most important protein source for feed farm animals (that in turn yields animal protein for human consumption).[5]

From Healthline Website:

Soybeans are mainly composed of protein but also contain good amounts of carbs and fat.

The nutrition facts for 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of boiled soybeans are (1Trusted Source):

Calories: 173
Water: 63%
Protein: 16.6 grams
Carbs: 9.9 grams
Sugar: 3 grams
Fibre: 6 grams
Fat: 9 grams
Saturated: 1.3 grams
Monounsaturated: 1.98 grams
Polyunsaturated: 5.06 grams
Omega-3: 0.6 grams
Omega-6: 4.47 g
Protein
Soybeans are among the best sources of plant-based protein.

The protein content of soybeans is 36–56% of the dry weight (2Trusted Source, 3Trusted Source, 4Trusted Source).

One cup (172 grams) of boiled soybeans boasts around 29 grams of protein (5Trusted Source).

The nutritional value of soy protein is good, although the quality is not quite as high as animal protein (6Trusted Source).

The main types of protein in soybeans are glycinin and conglycinin, which make up approximately 80% of the total protein content. These proteins may trigger allergic reactions in some people (4Trusted Source, 7Trusted Source).

Consumption of soy protein has been linked with a modest decrease in cholesterol levels (8Trusted Source, 9Trusted Source, 10Trusted Source).

Fat
Soybeans are classified as oilseeds and used to make soybean oil.

The fat content is approximately 18% of the dry weight — mainly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, with small amounts of saturated fat (11Trusted Source).

The predominant type of fat in soybeans is linoleic acid, accounting for approximately 50% of the total fat content.

Carbs
Being low in carbs, whole soybeans are very low on the glycaemic index (GI), which is a measure of how foods affect the rise in blood sugar after a meal (12).

This low GI makes soybeans suitable for people with diabetes.

Fibre
Soybeans contain a fair amount of both soluble and insoluble fibre.

The insoluble fibres are mainly alpha-galactosides, which may cause flatulence and diarrhoea in sensitive individuals (13Trusted Source, 14Trusted Source).

Alpha-galactosides belong to a class of fibres called FODMAPs, which may exacerbate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) (15Trusted Source).

Despite causing unpleasant side effects in some people, soluble fibres in soybeans are generally considered healthy.

They are fermented by bacteria in your colon, leading to the formation of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which may improve gut health and reduce your risk of colon cancer (16Trusted Source, 17Trusted Source).

SUMMARY
Soybeans are a very rich source of plant-based protein and fat. What’s more, their high fibre content is good for your gut health.

Grow Notes
Plant in late Spring/Summer. Soybeans need a long, hot growing season to thrive, and they don’t like frost.

Grow Notes:

Beans grow best in full sun in a site that has good drainage.

Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy while waiting for seeds to emerge and throughout the growing season. Some can develop rot if they are waterlogged.

Some of these are relatively insect resistant.

Sow
Plant Bean seeds directly in the garden when your Spring or Summer soil temperature is at least 15.5C, for the most reliable germination.

Each bean is a slightly different size, lay it on it’s side, once you can see how high it is from one side to the other (not how long) plant it just as deep.

Germination
Plants can emerge in 10 to 14 days. The temperature should be consistent for several days before planting.

Maturity
These beans may mature at different times. Pick often to encourage more beans to form.

To save beans for the next season cut down the entire plant at the end of the season and allow it to dry in a well-ventilated area for at least a week. The dried pods break open easily to reveal seven to 10 dried beans each. Store shelled beans in an airtight container in a cool, dry location until ready to use.

ITALIAN BROCOLLI CALABRESE! CLASSIC YUMMY FLAVOUR – EASY TO GROW BIG HEADS! HINT: PICK THE BIGGEST HEAD THEN LAY THE PLANT DOWN SIDEWAYS AND POP A BIT MORE SOIL ACROSS IT AND WATCH IT SET SIDE SHOOTS TO PICK MORE HEADS THE REST OF THE SEASON!

Description
Delicious early and late season heirloom favourite.

Introduced to the seed trade around 1910, this variety was brought to our shores-and our gardens-by Italian immigrants. A deliciously old-fashioned broccoli.

Tall, erect, 30-36″ plants give way to multiple side shoots once the central head is cut. Harvest 60-90 days after transplant.

This is an old standard variety that has been a mainstay in many people’s gardens year in and year out. This is partly because it does not mature uniformly and partly because it produces many side shoots. Perfect for home garden, fresh use.

SEEDS MEDIUM SIZED, ROUND, EASY TO SEE AND HANDLE.

Grow Notes
Broccoli is a cool season crop, when grown in temperatures that are too hot for it, they will bolt and flower instead of forming heads. This variety has large 15cm sized heads, followed by numerous side shoots extending its harvest. As with most vegetables, Broccoli grows best in a spot with full sun. However, when the temperatures start to rise creating some shade for them should help prevent bolting.

Protection is usually suggested to keep your crop safe from aphids and caterpillars.

Broccoli plants shouldn’t need supplemental feeding if your soil is rich. If they look like they need a boost or you want to hasten maturity, hit them with some nitrogen. Fish emulsion is good for this.

Sow
Plant direct or raise seedlings in early Spring or Autumn. Plant 5mm deep, 50cm apart with 60cm between rows in well-draining soils rich in organic matter.

Keep soil moist but never wet or dry.

Seedlings can be transplanted into the garden once they have their first true leaves and are large enough to handle easily.

Germination
3-7 days at 8-30°C

Maturity
65-70 days.

YOU HAVE TO GROW THIS AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR LIFETIME!!!! BROCCOLI THAT IS A CROSS BETWEEN BROCOLLI AND CAULIFLOWER THAT AMAZES THE EYES AND THE TASTEBUDS!

Description
The amazing Broccoli Romanesco!

Romanesco broccoli, also known as Romanesque cauliflower or simply as Romanesco, is an edible flower bud of the species Brassica oleracea. First documented in Italy, it is chartreuse in colour. Romanesco has a striking appearance because its form is a natural approximation of a fractal. (Each section is made up of an identical form to that of the largest floret right down to the smallest part.)

When compared to a traditional cauliflower, its texture as a vegetable is more crunchy, and its flavour is not as assertive, being delicate and nutty.
As a vegetable, Romanesco is rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, dietary fibre and carotenoids.

This is not genetically modified but is a natural occurring form that has been bred by growers. Simply amazing and very striking on the plate! I can imagine posh restaurants everywhere will be serving these very soon!

SEEDS ROUND, DARK BLACK, EASY TO SEE AND HANDLE.

Grow Notes
Broccoli is a cool season crop, when grown in temperatures that are too hot for it, they will bolt and flower instead of forming heads. This variety has large pale green spiralling heads growing to 20cm. As with most vegetables, Broccoli grows best in a spot with full sun. However, when the temperatures start to rise creating some shade for them should help prevent bolting.

Protection is usually suggested to keep your crop safe from aphids and caterpillars.

PERRENIAL BROCCOLI WALTHAM KEEPS PRODUCING SIDE HEADS FOR 3 MONTHS AFTER YOU PICK THE MAIN HEAD! EASY TO GROW AND DELICIOUS TO EAT! YOU CAN EAT THE LEAVES TOO!

Description
100% NO GMO & HOME GROWN SEEDS! EACH PLANT SUPPLIES OVER A KILO IN PRODUCE! First grown in Waltham, Massachusetts. Pick side shoots for up to 3 months. Yields more than 1kg per plant. Classic open pollinated cool climate broccoli.

Best harvested through to mid Spring. Heat sensitive, so not a summer variety. Produces large main heads and many side shoots.

The plant from which modern broccoli is derived first grew in the wild in the Mediterranean region and in Asia Minor. Broccoli gradually spread to the rest of Europe and to the New World, where Thomas Jefferson included this strange new vegetable in his experimental garden.

The Italians appreciated it so much that it got the name “Italian asparagus.” After World War I, Italian brothers Stefano and Andrea D’Arrigo brought their Sicilian variety of broccoli and began growing it in San Jose, California; they later shipped it to Boston’s North End, where it established a quickly expanding market.

SEEDS ARE REDDISH BROWN, MEDIUM SIZED, EASY TO SEE AND HANDLE.

Original price was: $2.10.Current price is: $1.50.Add to cart

SUPER CHEAP! A GREAT COVER CROP TO ADD ENERGY AND NUTRIENTS TO YOUR SOIL! GREEN MANURE IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS FOR ADDING GOODNESS TO THE SOIL! PLUS IT AERATES AND ENCOURAGES WORMS! PLANT NOW AND THE FLOWERS BRING BEES AND POLLINATORS TO YOUR WINTER CROPS TOO!

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), or common buckwheat, is a plant cultivated for its grain-like seeds and as a cover crop. Despite the name, buckwheat is not closely related to wheat, as it is not a grass. Instead, buckwheat is related to sorrel, knotweed, and rhubarb.

Buckwheat is referred to as a pseudocereal because its seeds’ culinary use is the same as cereals’, owing to their composition of complex carbohydrates.

Buckwheat was one of the earliest crops introduced by Europeans to North America. Dispersal around the globe was complete by 2006, when a variety developed in Canada was widely planted in China.

In India, buckwheat flour is known as kuttu ka atta and is culturally associated with the Navaratri festival. On the day of this festival, food items made only from buckwheat are consumed.

OUR REGULAR SEED PACKET FULL OF TRIANGULAR SEEDS, FERTILE AND FRESH!

Grow Notes
Buckwheat is a short-season crop that grows well in low-fertility soils; too much fertilizer – especially nitrogen – reduces yields, and the soil must be well drained. Plant in Spring and Summer, however in hot climates it can be grown only by sowing late in the Summer season, so that it blooms in cooler weather.

The presence of pollinators greatly increases yield and nectar from flowering buckwheat produces a dark-coloured honey.

If growing as a green manure crop, once the plants are approaching flowering, then cut or slash and dig into the soil to decompose.

Sow
Prepare soil for sowing by weeding and cultivating soil. Sow direct at a depth of 5-10mm at a rate of 100g to 100 square metres. This can be achieved by scattering over the soil surface and then raking and watering in or covering with a layer of soil.

Germination
4-12 days at 20- 26°C

Maturity
70- 100 days depending on use as cover crop, green manure or harvesting for seed.

A GREAT COVER CROP TO ADD ENERGY AND NUTRIENTS TO YOUR SOIL! GREEN MANURE IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS FOR ADDING GOODNESS TO THE SOIL! PLUS IT AERATES AND ENCOURAGES WORMS! PLANT AND THE FLOWERS BRING BEES AND POLLINATORS TO YOUR WINTER CROPS TOO!

Buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum, is a fast growing annual crop that has been cultivated for thousands of years across Asia and Eastern Europe. Despite its name, it is not related to wheat and is naturally gluten free. It belongs to the same family as rhubarb and sorrel and is valued both as a nutritious grain substitute and as a wonderful plant for improving soil and supporting pollinators.

Nutritionally, buckwheat is highly regarded. The seeds are rich in protein, dietary fibre, magnesium, manganese, copper, and antioxidants such as rutin, which is known to support circulation. Buckwheat is commonly used to make flour for noodles, pancakes, breads, and porridge. The young leaves and sprouts are also edible and can be used fresh in salads. Because it grows quickly and produces abundant flowers, it is also widely planted as a green manure crop to add organic matter back into the soil.

Buckwheat is one of the easiest crops to grow. It germinates rapidly, covers the ground quickly, and helps suppress weeds. The plants grow upright to around 60 to 100 cms tall, with heart-shaped leaves and clusters of small white to pale pink flowers that bees absolutely love. In fact, buckwheat honey is highly prized around the world. The plant thrives in moderate conditions and does well even in poorer soils.

How to Grow From Seed:

Sow buckwheat directly into the garden in spring or summer once frost danger has passed.

Scatter seed over prepared soil and rake in lightly, covering to around one to two centimetres deep.

Keep moist during germination, which usually occurs within five to ten days.

Buckwheat prefers full sun and moderate watering.

If growing as a grain, allow seeds to mature and dry on the plant before harvesting.

If using as green manure, dig or cut the plants down before they set seed and turn them into the soil to improve fertility.

BURRA WEEPING GRASS AUSTRALIAN NATIVE MICROLAENA STIPLOIDES SSP. BURRA DROUGHT TOLERANT HIGH PROTEIN NOT INVASIVE $2.30

Quantity BUY THIS ITEM!

$2.30Add to cart

PERFECT UNDER TREES AND PART SHADE, DROUGHT IS NO OBSTACLE, FROST NO OBSTACLE, GRAZING AND MOWING TOLERANT, AN ATTRACTIVE CLUMPING EVERGREEN NATIVE!

Microlaena is a tufted perennial grass that produces year round green growth and produces high quality feed (10 to 27% crude protein) that is also highly digestible (55–80%).

This is an extremely versatile and useful grass. Weeping grass has an attractive appearance, persistence and high grazing value, as well as tolerance of shade and acid soils. This means this grass is an incredibly popular choice across all industries. Weeping grass is a great option for roadsides, municipal parks and gardens as it requires little to no maintenance. This native provides persistent ground cover once established and requires mowing roughly 3-4 times a year. The dense foliage and soft leaves means that this grass produces a very high quality lawn. If you have issues where shading is common from buildings, fences and trees, this is the grass you need.

Golf course roughs – Weeping grass does not grow too tall and will permit mis-hit balls to be found.

Pastures in acid soils of moderate to high rainfall where high quality fodder, low fertilizer needs and persistence are valued.

Revegetation in conjunction with other native grasses for river and stream edges to reduce erosion.

Inter-row sowing and within-row sowing in vineyards and other horticulture where the persistence of the grass, its low growth and its shade tolerance make it a good choice in the right districts.

This product is APPROVED for distribution in Western Australia and Nationally.
Collect seed after flowering to propagate more plants

LOOKING FOR GRASSES? SEARCH FOR FOUNTAIN GRASS TOO!

Grow Notes
High drought tolerance, high frost tolerance, medium salt tolerance, grazing and mowing tolerant. Weeping grass requires minimal mowing, but if left unmowed, its leaves can grow to 30- 75cm in height. You can mow it down 3-4 times a year, usually in summer.

The most important thing to note is not to grow weeping grass in areas of high foot traffic as it is not a good grass variety for this purpose.

Burra Weeping grass will grow in sun or part shade and is adapted to a very wide variety of soil types; however, they prefer acidic soils best.

Spreads by seed and short rhizomes.

Sow
Microlaena seeds can be sown dry and will remain viable in the soil for up to three months until soil water becomes available. However, if sown dry germination can be patchy with some seeds continuing to germinate with each subsequent fall of rain.

Best to broadcast seed evenly over the ground in Autumn or Spring to take advantage of the cooler weather and growing season. If worried about birds eating the seed cover with a very light layer of garden soil. Water in well, but gently so as not to dislodge seeds. The aim is to moisten the soil sufficiently for germination, about 2-3 times a week.

Germination
7- 15 days depending on the soil temperature at sowing time.

Microlaena seeds will germinate in any month of the year in most Australian environments. However, mid-winter sowings in cold climates should be avoided as germination is very slow if the soil temperatures are much below 10°C.

Maturity
Coverage dependent on amount sown, soil water level and climate. Seed heads generally ripen from December to May.

Cabbage ‘Tall Paak Taoi’ (Brassica rapa var. chinensis) is a traditional Asian green, sometimes grouped with pak choi, that has been grown and enjoyed for centuries. Unlike the tight, round cabbages familiar in Western kitchens, this variety grows upright with long, fleshy white stalks topped by dark green leaves. It’s crunchy, tender, and versatile – perfect for stir-fries, soups, steaming, or enjoying fresh in salads. Originating in China, it has been a staple of cuisine for generations and remains one of the healthiest and most reliable greens for the home garden.

Medicinally, like many brassicas, Tall Paak Taoi is valued for its rich content of vitamins A, C and K, as well as folate and antioxidants that support immunity and overall wellbeing. Its mild flavour and fast growth make it a wonderful choice for anyone wanting to add more fresh, nutrient-rich greens to their diet.

How to Grow:

Sow directly into fertile soil in early spring or autumn, as it prefers the cooler seasons.

Plant seeds about 1 cm deep and thin seedlings to around 20–30 cm apart once established.

Paak Taoi appreciates steady moisture, rich soil, and a sunny to partly shaded spot. With a quick turnaround from seed to harvest – often within 6–8 weeks – you’ll have fresh, home-grown greens on your plate in no time.

‘Tall Paak Taoi’ is a true garden-to-table favourite: fast, nutritious, and delicious. It’s the kind of vegetable that rewards you with both abundance and flavour, making it a must-have for every seasonal patch!

RICH RED AND EMERALD GREEN AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN! COLOURFUL BIG CAPSICUMS THAT LOVE WARM WEATHER – HEIRLOOM, NATURALLY PEST RESISTANT – GORGEOUS HEAVY FRUITS!

Description
‘Californian YOLO Wonder’, is a prolific sweet bell capsicum with improved resistance to tomato mosaic virus. Its medium-size, blocky fruits are harvestable when green about 72 to 75 days after planting robust seedlings and turn glossy bright red a couple weeks later.

The fruit walls are thick, crisp and sweet and perfect for fresh eating and cooking.

Native to tropical America, these annuals had been grown and selected by Native Americans since pre-history times. In fact, their specific region of origin is still unknown due to distribution by man.

Peppers became available to Europeans when the new and old worlds connected. Since then, many unique selections have been developed in Europe—particularly in warm Mediterranean countries like Spain, Italy and Greece where they grow well.

Bell peppers are warm season vegetables that are easy to grow, if you can provide them with the correct conditions.

Abundant flowering and fruiting occurs year-round. Capsicums can be ornamental as well as tasty, so enjoy them as bedding or container plants as well as vegetable garden standbys. Green to red are most of the seeds, some other colours like orange, yellow and purple mixed in there too.

Please note: These seeds have been treated with a pink coloured sulphur mix to prevent browning/dampening off. They should not be ingested (don’t eat these seeds or feed them to livestock).  There are no known environmental effects of this as it is not persistent in soils and is nearly immobile in clay or highly organic soils. It also breaks down easily in water.

Grow Notes

Plant in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Some plants may need staking if getting too heavy with fruit.

Keep the soil moist but never wet.

Carrots, scientifically known as Daucus carota, are root vegetables that belong to the Apiaceae family. They are widely cultivated and consumed worldwide for their crisp texture, sweet flavor, and nutritional value. Did you know that carrots are believed to have originated in Central Asia, with wild varieties still found in regions such as Afghanistan and Iran. They have been cultivated for thousands of years and have been bred into numerous varieties with different shapes, colors, and sizes.

Berlicum carrots originated in Holland, a bright orange colour, it’s a medium sized chunky carrot with very little core, very sweet and with a rounded end. It’s a mid to late variety so you can have carrots over a longer time period. Easy to get going, these seeds are guaranteed 100% organic.

Grow Notes
Carrots do not need full sun, but they require a minimum of six hours per day. However, the more sunlight your garden can get, the better.

Carrots need a good quality, well worked-over, friable (lightly textured) soil to produce a long, straight taproot. Carrots grown in clay and compacted soils will be stumpy and have multiple forks. Avoid feeding your Carrot plants too much fertiliser as this can also encourage forking.

Try to remove any small rocks from the soil too as they’ll cause forking if the carrot root grows into them. Carrots can be grown in full sun or in a location that receives light shade for part of the day.

Sow
Sow direct in Spring, Summer or Autumn. Carrot seeds are quite small so mix with sand or fine potting mix prior to sowing or use a seed dispense (we have that in store now).

Plant seed 5mm deep. You can either sow several seed into each planting hole spaced 4cm apart or alternatively you can sow more densely along a trench, with rows 25cm apart.

After 4 weeks thin to healthy seedlings leaving about a 4cm gap between seedlings. Sow a few seed every week to ensure a continuing supply of delicious carrots.

Keep soil moist but never wet.

Protect young seedlings from pests, pets and weather until they are established.

Germination
14-21 days at 10-30°c
