Description
The air is surrounded by the heavily fragrant scent of vanilla, so you know someone just brushed against your Basil Blue Spice! This basil is commonly used medicinally and in tea but has its place in the culinary world as well. With its spikes of light purple flowers and attractive, uniform growth, many gardeners appreciate Blue Spice Basil simply for its ornamental properties.

Blue spice is generally thought of as an heirloom variety, growing to 45cm tall. Blooms appear in these approximate colours: Light pastel purple, and typically produces a prominent spicy vanilla fragrance.

Very vigorous with dense spikes of light purple flowers. Fragrance is heavy with spicy vanilla overtones that makes a pleasant contribution to both fruit salads and savoury dishes.

Grow Notes
Basil plants are best grown in full sun in Spring or early Summer. Choose a location that will receive at least 6 hours of full sun each day.

Sow
Basil seeds can be sown directly in the garden 2mm deep and 40cm apart, or using the scatter seed method. Simply rough the soil, scatter seeds over the surface, then smooth the soil over lightly to cover the seeds.

If using containers, fill trays, punnets or jiffy pots with a good quality seed-raising mix, or use soil starter pellets. Sow seeds 2mm deep. Keep soil moist but never wet or dry.

Germination
5-10 days at a soil temperature of 18-35°C.

Maturity
70-90 days Annual herb.
