Aquilegia ‘Nora Barlow’ produces nearly spherical, fully double flower heads made up of layers of small pink and white petals surrounding golden-yellow sepals. This elegant and upright plant is a favourite for its unique appearance and is a standout member of the Barlow Series, the first Aquilegia vulgaris range to feature fully double, spurless blooms. It also makes an excellent choice for cut flowers.

This variety is particularly attractive to bees, thanks to its nectar- and pollen-rich flowers. While the seeds are usually rare and costly, we’ve made them more accessible by offering smaller quantities per packet. Once your plants are established, it’s easy to collect your own seeds, providing a generous supply for future sowing or sharing.

‘Nora Barlow’ is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial with soft, finely divided foliage. Its flower stems rise gracefully above the leaves, holding nodding, bell-shaped flowers that sway gently in the breeze, creating a long-lasting and delicate display. It’s a lovely addition to cottage gardens, borders, or containers.

Aquilegias are a classic garden plant suited to a wide range of climates and growing conditions, making them a dependable choice for both new and experienced gardeners.

Grow Notes
Aquilegia forms a hardy, evergreen clump. They will grow in full sun but prefer a part shade position, growing to 90cms tall. Keep well-watered.

They are frost hardy and can tolerate severe frost down to below -20C. They can also handle heat and can tolerate some dry periods once established. Particularly when it is given some shade.

Sow
Aquilegia seeds grow best when they are raised in trays or other containers and transplanted to the garden once established. Fill trays, punnets or jiffy pots with a good quality seed-raising mix or use soil starter pellets. Sow seeds 3mm deep. Keep soil moist but never wet or dry.

Transplant seedlings to the garden once they have their first true leaves and are large enough to handle (usually 5-10cm tall). Plant out, spacing plants 40cm apart.

Germination
Seeds of this variety can be slow to germinate. Seeds should germinate in around 21-28 days at a soil temperature of 20-25°C. So be patient and follow the recommended depth and temperature guidelines closely for the best chance of success.

Maturity
Maturing at around 200 days from germination. They are clump forming, short lived perennials, meaning they usually live for between two and five years.
