BALSAM IMPATIENS CAMELLIA MIXED COLOURS ROSE SHAPED FLOWERED BEAUTY HEIRLOOM SEEDS $2.30

Balsam Impatiens Camellia (Impatiens balsamina ‘Camellia’) is a beautiful, old-fashioned annual flower known for its large, double blooms that resemble miniature camellias. Native to tropical Asia, particularly India and Southeast Asia, this species has been cultivated for centuries for both its ornamental and medicinal properties. It was introduced to Europe in the 17th century and quickly became a favourite in Victorian gardens for its exotic appearance and ease of growth.

Historically, Impatiens balsamina was used in traditional medicine across Asia. In Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, it was employed to treat skin conditions, inflammation, and fungal infections. The crushed leaves and flowers were often used as a poultice for burns, rashes, and joint pain. The plant contains compounds with antibacterial and antifungal properties, although its use in modern herbalism is limited. In some cultures, the juice of the petals was also used as a natural dye for fingernails.

Camellia Balsam produces bushy plants with upright stems, reaching around 30–60 cm in height. The leaves are narrow, toothed, and deep green, while the flowers are full and rounded, with multiple layers of petals in shades of pink, rose, red, white, and purple. These showy blooms appear along the stems, nestled between the foliage, giving the plant a lush and richly flowered appearance. They are particularly attractive in mass plantings, containers, and semi-shaded borders.

To grow from seed:

Ssow indoors in late winter to early spring or directly into the garden after the danger of frost has passed. In most parts of Australia, this means sowing from August to November, depending on your climate.

Sow seeds on the surface of moist seed-raising mix and press them down lightly, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Germination usually occurs within 7 to 14 days in warm conditions.

Transplant seedlings once they are large enough to handle, spacing them 20 to 30 cm apart in a well-drained, partially shaded to full sun position.

Balsam Impatiens Camellia prefers rich, moist soil and regular watering, especially during dry spells. It thrives in warm, humid conditions and benefits from mulching to keep the roots cool and retain moisture.

Deadheading is not necessary, but removing spent blooms can tidy the plant. With its bold, rose-like flowers and heritage appeal, this cheerful annual brings colour and nostalgia to any garden space.
