BEETROOT ROUND RAINBOW MIX FAST HARVEST AND EDIBLE LEAVES! GREAT VALUE SEEDS $2.30

Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) has been cultivated for thousands of years and is thought to have originated in the Mediterranean region. Early forms of beet were grown for their leaves rather than their roots. Over time, selective cultivation led to the development of the swollen, edible root we know today. The ‘Round Mix’ variety is a modern selection that includes a colourful blend of red, white, golden, and red and pink striped (Chioggia-style) beetroots, bred for uniform shape and vibrant colour. This mix provides gardeners with a visually appealing harvest and varied flavour!

MEDICINAL BENEFITS
Beetroot is considered a superfood due to its high levels of vitamins and minerals. It contains iron, potassium, folate, vitamin C, and antioxidants such as betalains, which may support liver health and reduce inflammation. Beetroot is also known for its potential to lower blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health thanks to its natural nitrates, which can help widen blood vessels. Additionally, beetroot juice is sometimes used to boost athletic performance by improving oxygen use. However, as with any food with high nitrate content, moderation is recommended.

The root is commonly roasted, boiled, steamed, or eaten raw in salads. The leaves, often called beet greens, are also edible and highly nutritious, similar in flavour and use to silverbeet or spinach. The mix of colours in this variety not only adds beauty to dishes but also subtly different flavours, from the earthy richness of red beets to the milder, sweeter notes of golden types.

HOW IT GROWS
Beetroot prefers cool to mild weather and is best grown in autumn, winter, and spring in most parts of Australia. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Beets don’t like to be transplanted, so they are usually grown directly from seed. The plant has a relatively short growing period of 8–12 weeks from seed to harvest, depending on the variety and conditions. Consistent watering helps prevent the roots from becoming woody or splitting.

HOW TO GROW IT FROM SEED
To grow Beetroot Round Mix from seed, sow directly into prepared garden beds. Loosen the soil and remove any stones or clumps that could impede root growth. Sow seeds about 1 to 2 cm deep and 8 to 10 cm apart in rows spaced about 25 cm apart. Beetroot seeds are actually clusters that often produce more than one seedling, so thinning is necessary once seedlings are a few centimetres tall to allow room for roots to develop.

Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and mulch lightly to retain moisture. Avoid overfeeding with nitrogen-rich fertilisers, as this can promote excessive leaf growth at the expense of the root. Harvest when the roots reach a desirable size—typically around the size of a golf ball for baby beets or a tennis ball for mature ones. For a continuous supply, sow in succession every 3 to 4 weeks.
