CHINESE HOUSES COLLINSIA HETEROPHYLLA SHADE LOVER BEE MAGNET EASY GROWER! $2.30
Collinsia heterophylla, commonly known as Chinese houses, is a striking wildflower native to California, USA. It is part of the Plantaginaceae family and is known for its layered, pagoda-like structure of flowers, which gives it the name “Chinese houses.”
Appearance:
Flowers: The flowers are usually purple or violet and white, arranged in distinct tiers. Each whorl of flowers gives the plant a unique pagoda-like appearance, blooming from the bottom to the top.
Leaves: The leaves are lance-shaped and alternate along the stem, with slightly toothed margins.
Size: Collinsia heterophylla typically grows to a height of around 30-60 cm.
Best Environment:
Climate: This plant thrives in temperate climates and is well-suited to Mediterranean-style conditions. It grows well into late winter to spring.
Light: It prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. In hot Australian summers, providing some afternoon shade is beneficial.
Soil: It grows best in well-draining soil that is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0). Sandy loam or loamy soil is ideal for this species.
Water: It requires moderate watering, especially when establishing the seeds or seedlings. Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant, but regular watering will encourage better blooms.
How to Grow Collinsia Heterophylla from Seed:
Sowing Time: In Australia, sow the seeds in late autumn or early winter (April-July) for flowering in late winter to spring.
Seed Preparation: Direct sowing into the ground is ideal. No special treatment is necessary for the seeds.
Sowing Depth: Scatter the seeds on the surface and lightly press them into the soil. Do not cover them with too much soil as they need light to germinate.
Spacing: Space the seeds about 15-20 cm apart to allow room for growth.
Watering: Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate, which should take about 10-20 days.
Care: Once the plants are established, they require minimal care. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage more blooms. They will self sow for more the following year.
Collinsia heterophylla is a low-maintenance, eye-catching plant that is well-suited to cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, or even containers. It attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for biodiversity-friendly gardens.
