CHIVES CLASSIC ONIONY GARDEN WONDER! PRETTY FLOWERS TOO! $2.30

Garden chives, known botanically as Allium schoenoprasum, are a perennial herb belonging to the onion family. They are one of the oldest known culinary herbs, with their origins tracing back thousands of years to Europe, Asia, and North America, where they grew wild before being cultivated. Historical records suggest chives have been used since at least the Middle Ages, both as a food flavouring and for medicinal purposes, and they have remained a staple in herb gardens across the world ever since.

Medicinally, garden chives share many properties with their onion relatives. They are rich in vitamins A and C, as well as minerals such as calcium and iron. Chives contain antioxidants and compounds such as allicin, which is thought to support heart health by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels. They have traditionally been used to stimulate appetite, aid digestion, and support the immune system. Their mild antibacterial and antifungal qualities also contribute to overall wellbeing, while their high levels of vitamin K are important for healthy bones and blood clotting.

How to grow:

Seeds can be sown in early spring or autumn, either directly into the garden or in pots. They germinate best in well-drained, fertile soil and in a sunny to partly shaded position.

Seeds should be sown shallowly, about half a centimetre deep, and kept moist until germination, which usually occurs within two to three weeks.

Once seedlings are established, thin them to clumps about 15 to 20 centimetres apart.

Chives benefit from regular watering, especially in dry weather, but do not like waterlogged soil.

They are hardy perennials that will die back in colder winters but return strongly in spring, and once established they require very little care. To harvest, simply snip the leaves as needed, cutting them close to the base to encourage fresh new growth.

In summer, chives produce attractive purple flower heads that are edible and can be used as a garnish, while also attracting pollinators to the garden.

Garden chives are not only an easy and beautiful herb to grow but also a nutritious and versatile addition to the kitchen, with their delicate onion flavour enhancing a wide range of dishes!
