CHRYSANTHEMUM ALASKA SHASTA DAISY A CARPET OF SNOWY WHITE FLOWERS! $2.30
Chrysanthemum ‘Alaska’ is a variety of the Chrysanthemum maximum species, commonly known as the Shasta daisy. This particular cultivar is known for its large, snow-white daisy-like blooms with bright yellow centres. Although the Chrysanthemum genus is native to Asia and northeastern Europe, the Shasta daisy was developed in the United States by plant breeder Luther Burbank in the late 1800s. The ‘Alaska’ variety is especially prized for its sturdy stems, upright habit, and cold hardiness, making it a reliable perennial in many garden settings.
All chrysanthemums are known to contain natural insect-repelling compounds such as pyrethrins, which are extracted for use in natural pest control products.
HOW IT GROWS
Chrysanthemum ‘Alaska’ is a hardy, clump-forming perennial that typically grows to about 60–90 cm tall. It thrives in full sun and prefers rich, well-drained soil. This variety is frost-hardy and particularly suitable for cooler regions of Australia, though it can also be grown in temperate zones. Its flowering period is typically from late spring through to the end of summer. The bright, daisy-like flowers make it a favourite for cottage gardens, borders, and cut flower arrangements. The plant benefits from regular deadheading to prolong blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.
HOW TO GROW IT FROM SEED
To grow Chrysanthemum ‘Alaska’ from seed, sow in late winter to early spring. Start seeds indoors or in a greenhouse if needed, as they require a bit of warmth to germinate. Scatter seeds lightly on the surface of moist seed-raising mix and press them down gently. Do not cover them with soil, as they need light to germinate. Keep the seed tray in a bright location with consistent moisture.
Seeds usually germinate within 10–21 days at temperatures around 18–21°C. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden after the last frost has passed. Space them about 30–40 cm apart to allow good airflow. Water regularly during dry periods, and feed occasionally with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Plants may require staking in windy areas due to their height. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour and encourage healthy growth.
