COLEUS RAINBOW IMPROVED MIX HARDY EASY GROWER, BEES AND BENEFICIAL INSECTS LOVE IT! $2.30
Latin Name: Plectranthus scutellarioides (formerly Coleus blumei) Coleus Rainbow Mix is a spectacular blend of foliage plants known for their vibrant, multi-coloured leaves. With patterns ranging from fiery reds and bright pinks to golden yellows and deep purples, it’s like planting a living rainbow in your garden!
Coleus is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia and parts of Africa, where it grows as an understory plant in warm, humid climates. Over time, it has become a global favourite for its striking foliage and adaptability.
Growing Conditions for Coleus Rainbow Mix:
Sunlight:
Prefers partial shade to filtered sunlight.
In cooler regions, it can handle more sun, but in hot Australian summers, protect it from harsh afternoon rays to avoid leaf scorch.
Soil:
Loves rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. A neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0–7.0) is ideal.
Climate:
Thrives in warm, humid conditions.
While it’s frost-sensitive, you can grow it as an annual in cooler climates or bring potted plants indoors during winter.
Water:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Coleus dislikes drying out completely, but soggy soil can lead to root rot.
How to Grow Coleus Rainbow Mix from Seed:
Sow seeds in late summer to early autumn in warm regions, or in spring in cooler areas.
Start seeds indoors in trays or small pots for best results. Coleus seeds are tiny and delicate.
Sprinkle the seeds on the surface of seed-raising mix and press them lightly into the soil.
Don’t cover the seeds—they need light to germinate!
Place the pots in a warm, bright spot out of direct sunlight.
Keep the soil surface moist with a fine mist spray.
Seeds will germinate in about 7–14 days.
Once the seedlings have 2–3 sets of true leaves, carefully transplant them into individual pots or garden beds, spacing them about 30 cm apart for good airflow and growth.
Pinch back stems regularly to encourage bushier growth and prevent the plant from becoming leggy.
Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weeds.
Fertilise every 4–6 weeks with a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser.
Coleus thrives in pots, making it perfect for patios, balconies, or indoor spaces.
Companions: Mix it with green-leafed plants or flowers to create stunning contrasts in garden beds. Propagation: It’s easy to grow more Coleus by taking stem cuttings—perfect for sharing with friends! Coleus Rainbow Mix brings instant joy to any garden or home with its dazzling colours and easy-care nature. Happy gardening!
