COSMOS CARPET FORMULA MIX DWARF VIBRANT BRIGHT COLOURS RED ORANGE YELLOW $2.30
Cosmos Carpet Formula Mix is a blend of compact, low-growing cosmos flowers (Cosmos bipinnatus), known for their vibrant colours and easy-care nature. This mix typically includes shades of white, orange, red, and yellow, creating a colourful carpet-like effect in garden beds, borders, and containers. It is particularly suited to Australian gardens due to its tolerance for heat and drought, and its ability to thrive in full sun.
In the garden, Cosmos Carpet Formula Mix serves multiple purposes. Its primary use is as an ornamental plant, providing long-lasting blooms throughout the warmer months. The mix is ideal for filling in garden spaces with bright, cheerful flowers, and because it grows to a compact height of about 30-45 centimetres, it’s perfect for low borders and edging. It’s also great for container planting on balconies or patios, where the burst of colours can be enjoyed up close. In addition to its ornamental value, cosmos flowers are known for attracting beneficial insects like bees and butterflies, promoting pollination and contributing to a healthy garden ecosystem.
How to grow your seeds:
Growing Cosmos Carpet Formula Mix from seed is straightforward and rewarding. The best time to sow the seeds is in late spring to early summer (September to November in Australia), after the danger of frost has passed and when soil temperatures are consistently above 18°C.
Cosmos thrives in well-drained soil, though it can tolerate a variety of soil types, including poorer soils. Before sowing, prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of about 15 centimetres and removing any weeds or debris. There’s no need to add fertiliser, as cosmos grows well in less fertile soils; too much fertiliser can result in excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.
When sowing the seeds, scatter them directly onto the soil surface, as cosmos seeds need light to germinate. Lightly press the seeds into the soil but avoid covering them deeply; about 1-2 millimetres of soil on top is sufficient. Space the seeds around 20 centimetres apart to allow for good airflow and to prevent overcrowding. After sowing, water the area gently but thoroughly to help the seeds settle in.
Cosmos seeds usually germinate within 7-14 days, depending on the temperature. Keep the soil consistently moist during this period, but be careful not to overwater, as soggy conditions can cause the seeds to rot. Once the seedlings are established, cosmos is quite drought-tolerant, and only needs occasional watering during dry spells. Regular deadheading (removing spent flowers) will encourage the plants to continue blooming throughout the season.
Cosmos Carpet Formula Mix is a low-maintenance plant that can handle neglect, making it an excellent choice for beginner gardeners or those looking for a fuss-free, colourful addition to their garden. Its extended bloom time, ease of growth, and beneficial insect-attracting qualities make it a versatile and attractive choice for any garden setting.
