COSMOS POLIDOR COMES IN BRIGHT AND HAPPY SHADES! EXCELLENT DROUGHT TOLERANCE BEE MAGNET! $2.40
Cosmos Polidor (Cosmos sulphureus ‘Polidor’) is a vibrant and easy-to-grow annual flower celebrated for its fiery shades of orange, red, and gold. This heirloom variety is part of the sulphureus species, which is native to Mexico and Central America and has become widely naturalised in many warm climates, including parts of Australia. It was introduced into European gardens in the late 19th century and quickly became a favourite for its drought tolerance and cheerful display of colour throughout the warmer months.
Historically, Cosmos sulphureus was grown primarily as an ornamental flower, bringing bright colour and pollinator activity into garden spaces. In traditional folk uses, some parts of the plant were brewed as a mild tea or used to aid digestion and reduce fevers, although it is not widely known for medicinal use today. What it is best known for is its role in supporting healthy garden ecosystems by attracting bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects.
Cosmos Polidor plants grow to around 60–90 cm tall with delicate, fern-like foliage and sturdy, upright stems. The daisy-like blooms are semi-double, giving them a full and layered appearance in fiery colours that resemble the tones of a glowing sunset. The flowers appear in abundance from late spring through to early autumn, adding warmth and movement to garden beds, borders, and wildflower meadows.
To grow from seed:
Sow directly into the garden in spring once the risk of frost has passed, or start indoors 4–6 weeks earlier. In most regions of Australia, sowing can begin from August to November, depending on local conditions.
Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil, and sow seeds about 5 mm deep. Keep soil moist during germination, which typically occurs within 7 to 10 days.
Once seedlings are around 10 cm tall, thin them out to 25–30 cm apart.
Cosmos Polidor thrives in full sun and does best in poor to moderately fertile soils. Too much fertiliser can lead to lush green foliage with fewer flowers, so avoid overfeeding. It is drought tolerant once established and doesn’t require much maintenance beyond regular deadheading to prolong the flowering season. Left to its own devices, it may self-seed and return the following year.
With its glowing, warm-toned blooms and ease of growth, Cosmos Polidor is a wonderful addition to cottage gardens, natural-style borders, and wildlife-friendly spaces. Its ability to flower over many months with little fuss makes it a reliable and joyful favourite in the Australian garden!
