DRAGONFRUIT RED FLESH FRESH SEEDS – RED ON THE OUTSIDE AND THE INSIDE! $2.30

Dragonfruit with Red Flesh is a truly exotic and eye-catching fruiting cactus, prized for its stunning looks and refreshing taste. Native to Central and South America, dragonfruit has been grown for centuries by the Maya and other Indigenous peoples, where it was valued as both food and medicine. Today it is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Dragonfruit is low in calories but rich in goodness. The red-fleshed varieties are especially high in antioxidants, vitamin C, fibre, magnesium, and betalains (the pigments that give the flesh its vibrant colour). Eating dragonfruit can support immunity, aid digestion, and provide a hydrating, refreshing snack. The seeds are edible too, and are a source of healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Besides being eaten fresh straight from the fruit, dragonfruit is often used in smoothies, fruit salads, desserts, and drinks. The bright red flesh also makes a beautiful natural food colouring. In some traditional medicines, the fruit and flowers were used to ease inflammation and support overall wellbeing.

How it Grows
Dragonfruit is a climbing cactus with long, three-sided stems that can reach several metres in length if supported. It produces spectacular, fragrant white flowers that open at night – some of the largest blooms in the plant world. These are pollinated by moths or bats in nature, but in the garden hand-pollination can improve fruit set. Once pollinated, the plant produces oval, scaly fruits with their trademark bright skin and colourful flesh inside. Plants thrive in warm, frost-free regions and can live for many years, producing crops once they mature.

How to Grow From Seed:

Scatter seeds on the surface of a free-draining cactus or seed-raising mix and cover very lightly.

Keep moist but not waterlogged, and place in a warm, bright spot.

Germination usually occurs within 1–3 weeks.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them into individual containers.

Dragonfruit needs full sun and support such as a trellis, post, or frame to climb.

Plant in well-draining soil and water regularly in summer, but allow the soil to dry between waterings to prevent rot. In cooler areas, it is best grown in a large pot that can be moved under cover during cold weather.

Plants grown from seed may take 3–5 years to produce fruit, but they reward you with their spectacular flowers and unique harvests. Seed grown Dragonfruit may have different colours and may not be true to the parent. Variegation, outer colour changes, flesh colour changes and more can be explored when growing from seed.
