FORSYTHIA SUSPENSA LIAN QIAO WEEPING SHRUB HERB MEDICINAL $2.30
Forsythia suspensa, commonly known as Weeping Forsythia, is a deciduous flowering shrub native to China, where it has been grown and valued for well over a thousand years. It is one of the original species behind many modern forsythia hybrids and has long been admired for its graceful arching branches and masses of bright yellow flowers that appear very early in spring, often before the leaves emerge. In traditional Chinese culture, it has been both an ornamental and an important medicinal plant. Maximum size 3M x 2M, prefers a wind protected sunny position in well drained soil.
Forsythia suspensa is not grown as a food plant, but it has significant traditional medicinal use. The dried fruit, known as Lian Qiao in Chinese medicine, has been used for centuries in herbal preparations. It contains antioxidants, flavonoids, and anti-inflammatory compounds and has traditionally been used to support immune health and address infections. While historically important, medicinal use today should always be guided by professional advice.*
In the garden, Forsythia suspensa is prized for its dramatic early-season display and elegant form. It grows as a large, arching shrub that can reach two to three metres tall and wide. In early spring, the bare branches are completely covered in golden-yellow, bell-shaped flowers, creating a spectacular burst of colour when little else is in bloom. Once flowering finishes, fresh green leaves appear, and the plant provides attractive foliage for the rest of the growing season. It is hardy, fast growing, and tolerant of a wide range of conditions, making it an excellent choice for temperate Australian gardens.
How to Grow From Seed:
Forsythia seeds benefit from cold stratification, so chilling them in the refrigerator for six to eight weeks before sowing can improve germination. Keeping these in the fridge long term (normal shelf inside their ziplock bag) is fine until sowing.
Sow seeds in autumn or early spring.
Sow seeds into trays filled with well-draining seed raising mix and cover lightly with soil.
Keep moist but not wet and place in a bright position out of harsh heat.
Germination can be slow and uneven, taking several weeks.
Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots and grow on until established.
Plant out into the garden in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil.
Forsythia suspensa responds well to pruning after flowering, which helps maintain shape and encourages vigorous new growth.
