Honesty plants are usually purple, but these come in a striking mix of lavender, white, and hot pink—perfect for collectors seeking something rare in their garden! Known as Honesty, they are also called the Silver Dollar or Money Plant in the USA. This plant is easy to care for and prized more for its seed cases than its flowers. The seed cases are flat, round, translucent, and papery, resembling small moons, with several orbiting each stem when pollination is successful.
Before the popularity of modern dried flowers, there were mainly two choices: statice or honesty. Honesty was particularly favoured around Christmas and New Year, often staying in a vase for months after being arranged. Home-grown honesty would traditionally be harvested in September or October during a dry spell, then hung upside down to dry until needed. Nowadays, many gardeners prefer to leave the plants outdoors to adorn the winter garden, where their shimmering seed pods add beauty to otherwise barren landscapes.
While honesty is best known for its seed pods, the flowers themselves are far from ordinary. Some strains feature richly coloured blooms in vibrant deep purple with a hint of magenta.
Lunaria annua is a biennial plant from the brassica family. It’s a hardy, self-sufficient plant that often chooses its own place to grow. When happy, it can become a robust, branching plant, reaching up to 60 cm tall and 45 cm wide.
