INDIAN MOTH BEAN VIGNA ACONITIFOLIA MAT BEAN MATKI DEW BEAN SEEDS $2.50

Indian Moth Bean is a tough, heat-loving legume perfect for Australian gardens, especially in warmer and drier regions. Originally from India and Pakistan, it has been grown for centuries for its reliability and high nutritional value. These small beans are rich in protein, fibre, iron, calcium, and B vitamins, making them a fantastic addition to curries, dals, and sprouted dishes. The plants are low-growing and spreading, thriving in poor soils and hot conditions while also improving soil by fixing nitrogen. Sow seeds directly into warm soil in late spring to early summer, planting 2–3 cm deep in a sunny position. Germination occurs within 5–10 days, and once established, plants need very little water. Harvest young pods fresh or allow them to dry for storage or sprouting.

It is especially valued in arid and semi-arid climates because of its ability to thrive in poor soils and withstand extreme heat and drought. It remains an important crop across India, where it is used in traditional dishes and as a reliable source of nutrition.

Nutritionally, moth beans are rich in plant-based protein, dietary fibre, iron, calcium, magnesium, and B vitamins. They are low in fat and highly nourishing, making them an excellent addition to a balanced diet. The dried beans are commonly cooked in curries, stews, and dals, while the sprouts are also widely eaten fresh or lightly cooked. Sprouting increases the availability of nutrients and gives the beans a fresh, slightly nutty flavour.

The plant itself is a low-growing, spreading annual legume with small leaves and fine stems that can trail along the ground or climb slightly if given support. It produces small yellow flowers followed by slender pods containing the seeds. Moth bean is particularly suited to hot Australian conditions, especially in northern and inland regions, and it can also be grown in warmer parts of the south during summer. Like other legumes, it helps improve soil fertility by fixing nitrogen, making it useful in crop rotation or as a soil-building plant.

How to Grow From Seed:

Sow seeds directly into the garden in late spring to early summer once the soil has warmed and all risk of frost has passed.

Plant seeds about two to three centimetres deep in well-drained soil and keep moist until germination, which usually occurs within 5 to 10 days.

Space plants about 20 to 30 centimetres apart.

Choose a sunny position and water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering as the plants mature, as they are very drought tolerant.

Pods can be harvested green for fresh use or left to dry on the plant for harvesting as dried beans. For sprouting, harvest mature seeds and soak before use.
