IRANIAN WOOD SAGE TEUCRIUM HIRCANICUM CAUCASIAN GERMANDER HEAT LOVER DROUGHT TOLERANT $2.50
Teucrium hircanicum, often called Caucasian Germander or sometimes Wood Sage, a hardy and eye-catching perennial that’s both decorative and a great friend to pollinators.
This plant is native to the Hyrcanian (or Hircanian) forests of northern Iran and neighbouring regions along the Caspian Sea. These ancient forests are rich in biodiversity, and Teucrium hircanicum is one of the many unique plants adapted to thrive there. Over time, it has been taken into ornamental gardens in Europe and beyond, especially loved for its low-maintenance nature and summer-long display of flower spikes.
Nutritionally, like its cousin herbs in the mint family (Lamiaceae), it isn’t grown for eating, but it does contain essential oils and natural compounds that have been valued in folk medicine. Some traditional uses of related Teucrium species include teas for digestion, soothing respiratory ailments, and general tonics, though it’s not commonly used in modern herbal medicine. Its main “nutritional” contribution is ecological – it’s an excellent nectar and pollen source for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
In the garden, Teucrium hircanicum is a resilient perennial that forms neat clumps of green foliage topped with tall, slender spikes of rich purple to burgundy flowers. It flowers for months on end, often from early summer well into autumn, making it one of those plants that really earns its place in the garden. It tolerates heat, drought, and poorer soils once established, making it perfect for Australian gardens looking for colour with low water needs.
How to Grow:
To grow from seed, sow indoors in seed trays or punnets in spring.
The seeds are fine and should only be lightly pressed into the soil surface – they need light to germinate.
Keep the soil just moist and in a warm, bright spot, and germination usually takes 2–4 weeks.
Once seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and harden them off before planting into the garden.
Choose a sunny position with well-draining soil.
These plants will spread gently into clumps, so allow them some space, and enjoy their long season of vibrant flower spikes that sway beautifully in the breeze.
