JACOBS LADDER POLEMONIUM CAERULEUM CHARITY GREEK VALERIAN HERB $2.50
Jacob’s Ladder is a plant that feels both nostalgic and timeless – a touch of history in the garden that combines graceful foliage with cottage charm. It’s perfect for those who love a garden with stories behind the plants, not just colour and beauty!
Jacob’s Ladder (Polemonium caeruleum) is a charming old-fashioned herbaceous plant named for the neat “ladder” of leaflets that climb up its stems like little green rungs. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, it has been grown in cottage gardens since at least the Middle Ages, where it was prized for both its beauty and its gentle healing qualities. In bloom, it produces clusters of bell-shaped flowers in soft shades of blue, violet, or sometimes white, making it a lovely addition to a spring or summer garden.
Traditionally, Jacob’s Ladder was used in herbal medicine for treating fevers, coughs, and mild inflammations. While it is not widely used in modern herbal practice, it remains a fascinating reminder of how people once turned to their gardens for remedies. Today, it is far more valued for its ornamental charm and ability to brighten shady corners of the garden.
How to Grow:
Sow in autumn or early spring when the soil is cool, either directly into the ground or in seed trays for transplanting later.
Seeds can take a little patience, sometimes germinating slowly, so keep the soil moist but not soggy.
Choose a partly shaded spot with rich, well-drained soil and plenty of organic matter.
Once established, it forms neat clumps and returns year after year, rewarding you with delicate fronds and clouds of soft flowers that attract bees and butterflies.
Always consult a medical or herbal practitioner before embarking on any program of using a medical herb. Some herbs should not be taken in certain situations, for example pregnancy, or for certain health conditions where adverse reactions may be possible. Alternatively, you may have allergies to an herb, or induce side effects from other medication and health conditions. So please do not take without qualified medical advice.
