All species of kangaroo paws hail from Western Australia, exclusively inhabiting this state. In temperate climates, cultivation often involves either greenhouse cultivation or outdoor growth with protective mulching during winter. These plants readily sprout from seed, requiring a dry spell during their dormant phase. Renowned for their distinctive appearance and longevity, they frequently grace floral arrangements.

Anigozanthos manglesii, colloquially known as the red-and-green kangaroo paw or Mangles’ kangaroo paw, holds the prestigious title of Western Australia’s floral emblem. Symbolizing the state’s unique flora, its vibrant display captivates from August to November, adorning both urban landscapes and coastal vistas. While not endangered, it enjoys legal protection under state statutes, necessitating a license for wild harvesting. Highly prized as a cut flower, its unconventional shape and enduring hues make it a standout choice.

Anigozanthos species commonly propagate from seed, ideally sown in well-draining seed-raising mix during the warmer months. Within about a year, young plants typically bloom. Additionally, clumps can be divided in early summer to propagate new specimens.

Grow Notes
Anigozanthos manglesii is to be planted in full sun and is adaptable to most soil types, from sandy to clay, and will even grow partly immersed, tolerating wet feet.

Watering should be withheld during the dormant period.

It is less prone to the fungal attacks other kangaroo paws suffer, such as ink spot disease or rust. To avoid further outbreaks of ink spot disease simply avoid overhead watering of the plant, keeping the leaves dry.

After the second-year rhizome divisions can be taken Autumn, simply by cutting the rhizome with a sharp knife or spade, ensuring each section has a healthy bud on it. These can then be planted as separate plants and will recover very quickly.

Sow
The seed should be sown in a freely draining seed-raising mix during Spring and Summer. Cover no more than the same depth as the width of the seeds themselves.

Keep the soil moist, never wet.

15-40 days after the first watering.

Maturity
The young plants usually flower after a year.
