MULLEIN VERBASCUM PHOENICEUM A RAINBOW OF STUNNING COLOURS EASY GROWER SEEDS $2.30

Relatively unknown by gardeners, the Purple Mullein is a worthwhile perennial, especially for hot sunny sites. Plants form a low, ground-hugging rosette of crinkly green leaves, bearing upright stems or spikes of flowers in a range of soft pastel colours, from white through pink to rose and purple. Stems are tall and excellent for cutting. Self sowing. Seedlings are easily moved while small. Most effective when planted in groups towards the middle of the border. Also interesting in tubs or mixed containers.

The soft and fluffy leaves used to be used by the poor to line their shoes in the cold weather in England!

These plants look incredible in dry, coastal or cottage gardens. They need to be kept out of strong winds and the seeds will self-seed if you don’t remove the seed pods. Gather the seeds to share with your gardening buddies!

Verbascums are commonly known as Mullein. These are evergreen perennials, the foliage disappearing only briefly in the coldest of climates.

THIS MULLEIN IS NOT MEDICINAL.

Grow Notes
Prefers full sun in well-draining soil. They don’t mind alkaline soils, and as long as you water them when they are young, they don’t need much after that.

Sow
Sow direct or raise seedlings in Spring or Autumn, by placing on the soil surface and pressing gently to ensure soil contact. You can scatter sand very thinly over if needed to stop birds eating the seed but do not fully cover as they need light to germinate.

Keep soil moist, but not wet. Wet and boggy conditions will rot your plants.

Germination
14-30 days at 18-21°C

Maturity
100 days.
