‘Barletta’ is a delightful onion for gardeners who love flavour, tradition, and variety. Whether you’re pickling jars for the pantry, adding a touch of sweetness to roasts, or simply enjoying their neat little bulbs straight from the garden, this variety brings both heritage and taste to your patch.
Onion ‘Barletta’ (Allium cepa) is a charming Italian heirloom that produces small, pearly white bulbs with a sweet, mild flavour. It originates from Italy, where it has been grown for generations, especially in the northern regions around the town of Barletta from which it takes its name. Traditionally, these little onions are harvested young and used whole in Mediterranean cooking – pickled, roasted, or tossed into stews where they melt into sweetness.
Medicinally, onions have a long history of use. They are known to contain compounds that support heart health, reduce inflammation, and boost immunity, thanks to their antioxidants and natural sulphur content. While Barletta carries the same goodness as all members of the onion family.
How to Grow:
Sow seeds in autumn or early spring in well-drained, fertile soil.
Scatter thinly, cover lightly, and keep moist until germination.
Space seedlings around 5–10 cm apart for bulbs, or closer if you want to harvest them young as cocktail onions.
They enjoy a sunny position and regular watering, and they grow quickly – often ready to pick in just 60–90 days.
