These are the type of flowers that make you stop and marvel at how one delicate, thin-stemmed bloom can be so striking. Despite their name, Iceland poppies (Papaver nudicaule) don’t actually originate from Iceland. Their name might come from their ability to withstand cold climates, though they also thrive in warmer regions when grown during cooler months. In fact, they come from Siberia, another place with extreme temperatures, but they bloom beautifully in both hot and cold climates when planted at the right time in a sunny spot and kept moist.

If you plant them in early autumn, they’ll start flowering at the beginning of winter. With regular feeding, watering, and by removing the seed heads, they can continue blooming until Christmas.

Iceland poppies tend to flower longer in cooler weather, with each bloom lasting longer. As the weather warms and days lengthen, they shift their energy towards forming seed heads rather than producing new flowers.

There are a few tips to ensure the most stunning and long-lasting display of Iceland poppies. First, remove the initial flower buds (though it can be hard to resist!) so the plants can grow strong before they start blooming. Simply twist off the tiny buds in the centre of the rosette with your fingers.

If you want your poppies to continue blooming while also allowing them to produce seeds, feed them with a water-soluble potassium fertiliser every two weeks. This encourages the blossoms to last up to two months, so even as some flowers fade to form seeds, the vibrant blooms will continue to dominate the display.
