Poppy Oriental Mix (Papaver orientale mixed colours) is a stunning perennial flower known for its bold, tissue-paper-like blooms in a mix of vivid shades including scarlet, pink, coral, white, and deep plum. Native to the Caucasus region of Central Asia, particularly Turkey, Iran, and the Himalayas, the Oriental poppy has been cultivated in gardens since the 18th century and became especially popular in English and European borders during the Victorian era for its dramatic presence and striking flowers.
Historically, poppies have held deep symbolic and medicinal significance. Oriental poppies were appreciated more for their beauty than for any pharmacological use, though their relatives were used in traditional medicine for pain relief, sedation, and cough suppression. The Oriental types were typically grown for ornamental purposes and for their ability to draw pollinators like bees into early summer gardens.
The plant grows in clumps with finely divided, hairy green leaves and thick, upright stems that can reach 60 to 90 cm in height. Each stem holds a single spectacular bloom measuring up to 15 cm across. The flowers are bowl-shaped with ruffled or fringed petals, often featuring dark blotches at the base, and they bloom profusely in late spring to early summer. After flowering, the plants die back in summer heat, leaving behind decorative seed pods and a dormant crown that regrows the following year.
To grow from seed:
Sow either in autumn or early spring. Oriental poppies need a period of cold to germinate well, so sowing outdoors in late autumn or early winter is ideal in most parts of Australia. Sow seeds on the surface of moist, well-drained soil in full sun and do not cover them, as light helps trigger germination.
Keep the soil evenly moist during the germination period, which can take 20 to 30 days or longer in cooler weather. Once established, thin seedlings to about 30 cm apart.
Poppy Oriental Mix prefers a sunny position and thrives in soils that are fertile but not overly rich.
Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot, particularly in areas with summer rainfall.
Once flowering has finished and the foliage begins to yellow, the plant enters dormancy and should be left undisturbed.
Avoid watering during this period. In autumn, new foliage will emerge as temperatures cool.
With its bold colour palette, dramatic structure, and old-world charm, Oriental Poppy Mix is a breathtaking addition to perennial beds, cottage gardens, and wildflower plantings, offering a reliable burst of beauty year after year!
