SCHIZANTHUS ANGEL WINGS MIXED COLOURS POOR MAN’S ORCHID BUTTERFLY FLOWERS $2.50

‘Angel Wings’ is the kind of plant that makes a garden feel playful and alive. Whether you’re filling a border, brightening a patio pot, or adding a splash of colour indoors, this variety will delight you with its delicate, orchid-like charm all season long.

Schizanthus ‘Angel Wings’ (Schizanthus pinnatus) is a dazzling annual often called the “Poor Man’s Orchid” because of its orchid-like blooms, each one splashed with intricate colours and delicate markings. Originally native to Chile, the plant was introduced to European gardens in the early 1800s where it quickly became a favourite for glasshouses and cottage gardens. ‘Angel Wings’ is one of the most striking varieties, producing masses of butterfly-like flowers in shades of pink, lilac, magenta, white and soft yellow, each bloom appearing as if hand-painted.

Although not traditionally used as a medicinal herb, Schizanthus has long been treasured for its cheerful presence and uplifting beauty. Its kaleidoscope of blooms has made it a symbol of joy and celebration, brightening both garden beds and containers with a flamboyant display that lasts well into the warmer months.

How to Grow:

Growing ‘Angel Wings’ from seed is easy if you start them in the cooler months of early spring or autumn.

Sow the fine seeds just below the surface of moist seed-raising mix and keep them lightly covered.

They prefer a sunny to partly shaded spot with protection from harsh afternoon sun, and they thrive in well-drained, fertile soil.

Regular watering will reward you with sturdy plants reaching about 30–45 cm high, smothered in blooms that attract bees, butterflies and admiring glances from visitors.
