SILENE STRIDOLO VULGARIS BLADDER CAMPION SCULPIT ITALIAN HERB $2.70

Silene vulgaris, commonly called Stridolo, Sculpit, or Bladder Campion, is a charming perennial herb with delicate, balloon-like white flowers and tender edible leaves. Native to southern Europe, this plant has been gathered and grown for centuries, especially in Italy, where it has become part of the regional food culture.

The young leaves and shoots of Silene vulgaris are edible and full of nutrition. They are rich in vitamin C, calcium, iron, and antioxidants, making them both delicious and health-giving. The flavour is mild and slightly herbal, somewhere between peas and spinach, and they are often used fresh in salads or lightly sautéed in traditional Italian dishes.

In Italy, Stridolo is so highly regarded that it is celebrated with the Sagra dello Stridolo, a food festival held in the Emilia-Romagna region. At this annual event, locals prepare a wide range of dishes using Stridolo, from risottos and pastas to omelettes, celebrating the herb’s unique flavour and cultural heritage. What began as a humble foraged green has become a symbol of community and tradition.

Silene vulgaris forms a low-growing clump of green leaves and sends up slender stems topped with clusters of pale, balloon-like flowers through spring and summer. It is hardy, perennial, and easy to grow in most gardens. Once established, it will return year after year with little care, thriving in sunny spots with well-drained soil. Regular picking of the young leaves encourages fresh growth.

How to Grow From Seed:

Sow seeds in spring or autumn, either in trays or directly in the garden.

Scatter the seed on the surface of the soil and cover very lightly, as they need some light to germinate.

Keep the soil moist until seedlings emerge, usually within 1–3 weeks.

Once seedlings are strong enough, thin or transplant them to around 20–25 cm apart.

Plants enjoy full sun to partial shade and are adaptable to many soil types, provided they are well drained.

Harvest young leaves when the plants are about 10 cm tall, and continue to pick regularly to keep the plants producing.
