SWEET ANNIE ARTEMISIA ANNUA SWEET WORMWOOD FAST GROWING HERB MEDICINAL $2.30
Artemisia annua, commonly known as Sweet Wormwood or Annual Wormwood, is a fast-growing aromatic herb native to China, where it has been used for over two thousand years. It was first recorded in ancient Chinese medical texts and became internationally well known in the 20th century for its role in modern medicine. From Asia it spread to Europe, Africa, and Australia, where it is now grown as a medicinal, ornamental, and companion plant.
Artemisia annua is not used as a regular food plant, but it is highly valued for its medicinal compounds. The leaves contain artemisinin, along with flavonoids and essential oils, which have been studied for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally, the plant was used in teas and preparations to support fevers and general well being. While historically important, modern medicinal use should always be approached with care and professional guidance, as it is a potent plant.*
The plant itself is attractive and fragrant, with finely divided, feathery green leaves and a light, herbal scent. It grows quickly into a tall, bushy annual, often reaching one and a half to two metres in height. In late summer to autumn it produces small, pale yellow flowers. Artemisia annua thrives in full sun and adapts well to a range of soil types, provided drainage is good. It is hardy, drought tolerant once established, and also useful in the garden for its natural pest-repelling qualities.
How to Grow From Seed:
Sow seeds in spring once temperatures begin to warm.
The seeds are very fine and should be surface sown onto seed raising mix, then lightly pressed in without covering, as light aids germination.
Keep the soil moist but not wet.
Germination usually occurs within one to two weeks.
Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots and grow on before planting out into the garden.
Space plants at least fifty centimetres apart to allow for their size.
Choose a sunny position and water regularly during establishment.
Plants grown from seed will usually reach full size and flower within the same growing season.
