TOMATO BIG RAINBOW HEIRLOOM STUNNER UP TO 500 GRAMS + EXCEPTIONAL FLAVOUR $2.60

‘Big Rainbow’ is prized for its sweet, mild flavour with low acidity. The large fruit can weigh over 500 grams and has a marbled appearance with yellow flesh and red streaks running through it. It is excellent for slicing and enjoying fresh in salads, sandwiches, or on its own with a little salt. Its beautiful colouring also makes it a showpiece in any summer meal or tomato platter.

Tomato ‘Big Rainbow’ is a striking heirloom variety that originated in the United States and dates back to the 20th century. It is part of the Solanum lycopersicum species and is cherished for its large, beautifully coloured fruit and exceptional flavour. Unlike modern hybrid varieties bred for shipping and shelf life, ‘Big Rainbow’ has been passed down through generations for its taste and visual appeal, making it a popular choice among home gardeners and heritage seed savers.

Tomatoes are naturally rich in vitamins A and C, potassium, and the antioxidant lycopene, which is known for supporting heart health and reducing the risk of certain cancers. ‘Big Rainbow’ tomatoes, like other full-coloured heirlooms, offer a broad range of nutrients and are particularly good for a healthy, balanced diet.

HOW IT GROWS
This is an indeterminate tomato, meaning it will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season until frost kills it. In many areas of Australia it wil be perrenial. It grows vigorously and requires staking or caging for support. Plants typically reach heights of 1.5 to 2 metres and benefit from a warm, sunny position with rich, well-drained soil. Regular watering, mulching, and feeding with a balanced organic fertiliser will encourage healthy growth and fruiting.

GROWING FROM SEED
To grow ‘Big Rainbow’ from seed, for an early start you can sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your region’s last expected frost date. In most parts of Australia, this means starting seeds in late winter to early spring. But you can start seeds right through late spring and early summer. Use seed-raising mix in trays or pots and sow the seeds about 5 mm deep. Keep the soil warm (around 20–25°C) and moist, and expect germination in 7–14 days.

Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days. Transplant into the garden in a sunny, well-prepared spot, spacing plants 60–90 cm apart. Stake or cage the plants early and water consistently, avoiding wetting the foliage to reduce the risk of disease.

Fruit typically appears in 85–90 days from transplant. Harvest when tomatoes are fully coloured with a rich yellow and red blush. They should feel slightly soft to the touch and lift easily from the vine.
