TOMATO GOLDEN ROMA YELLOW RICH TASTY VERSATILE PASTE EASY GROWER SEEDS $2.50

Tomato Golden Roma is a cultivated variety of Solanum lycopersicum, specifically bred for its striking golden-yellow colour and rich, low-acid flavour. It is a type of paste tomato, similar in shape to the traditional red Roma, but with a sweeter and milder taste. While the standard Roma tomato originates from Italy and has been widely cultivated around the world, Golden Roma is a more recent variety developed by plant breeders looking to offer a colourful alternative with the same meaty, low-seed interior ideal for sauces and preserving.

Like all tomatoes, Golden Roma is a good source of vitamins A and C, potassium, and dietary fibre. It also contains antioxidants such as lycopene, although in smaller amounts than red tomatoes due to its lighter pigmentation. Lycopene has been linked to heart health, anti-inflammatory effects, and potential cancer prevention. The golden variety also provides beta-carotene, which supports immune function and eye health.

Golden Roma tomatoes are prized in the kitchen for their mild, sweet flavour and low acidity. They are excellent for making yellow pasta sauces, soups, and salsas, and can also be used fresh in salads or for roasting. Their low moisture and dense flesh make them particularly good for preserving and drying.

HOW IT GROWS
This variety is a determinate (bush-type) tomato plant, which means it grows to a set height and fruits all at once, making it suitable for home gardeners who want a large harvest in a short window. Space out your planting and have them for a much longer season. Plants typically grow to around 90–120 cm tall and need some support as the fruit clusters can be quite heavy. They prefer full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Being disease-resistant and compact, Golden Roma is ideal for small gardens and containers.

GROWING FROM SEED
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your region’s last expected frost. Or plant them any time up until late spring early summer. Use a seed-raising mix and sow seeds about 5 mm deep. Keep the soil warm (around 21–24°C) and moist until germination occurs, usually within 7–14 days. Once seedlings develop two sets of true leaves, they can be potted on into larger containers.

Harden off plants by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week before transplanting. Plant into the garden when all danger of frost has passed, spacing 45–60 cm apart in full sun. Water regularly, especially during fruit set, and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. You can harvest Golden Roma when the fruit is fully coloured and slightly soft to the touch.
