TOMATO LUCID GEM STRONG GROWER TRUE FLAVOUR AND ANTIOXIDANTS TOO! $2.30
Tomato ‘Lucid Gem’ is one of the most striking tomatoes you’ll ever grow, a true showpiece for the garden and the kitchen. Bred in the United States by Brad Gates of Wild Boar Farms, this variety was introduced in the early 2010s and quickly became a favourite with heirloom tomato lovers. Known for his colourful and unusual tomato breeding, Brad Gates described ‘Lucid Gem’ as one of his personal best creations.
The fruit is medium-sized, with golden-orange skin flushed with deep indigo shoulders that darken in the sun. Slice one open and you’ll discover a stunning ruby-red heart, making it every bit as beautiful inside as out. The flavour is just as special – rich, sweet, and tangy with a complexity that tomato enthusiasts adore.
Nutritionally, ‘Lucid Gem’ is packed with vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and fibre, making it a healthy addition to your meals. The indigo pigments on its skin are rich in anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants linked to a range of health benefits, from boosting immunity to supporting heart health.
This is an indeterminate tomato, which means it will continue to grow and produce fruit throughout the season if kept well fed and cared for. The plants are strong, productive, and quite eye-catching in the garden thanks to the colourful fruits glowing on the vine.
‘Lucid Gem’ is perfect for slicing into salads, layering in sandwiches, or using as a colourful garnish that will impress at any table. Its unique look and superb flavour make it a real talking point.
How to Grow From Seed:
At the earliest sow seeds in late winter to early spring, around 6–8 weeks before the last frost date in your area, or after Spring and into mid and late summer, planting them about 0.5 cm deep in seed-raising mix. Keep the soil moist and warm (around 20–25°C) until germination, which usually takes 7–14 days.
Once seedlings develop their first sets of true leaves, pot them up into larger containers to strengthen their roots. Transplant outdoors when the weather is reliably warm and frost-free. Choose a sunny position, space plants 50–60 cm apart, and support them with stakes or trellises as they grow.
Feed regularly with a tomato fertiliser and keep soil consistently moist. ‘Lucid Gem’ generally matures in about 75–80 days from transplanting, producing a steady harvest of its stunning fruits right through the summer.
