TOMATO RIESENTRAUBE HEIRLOOM FULL TOMATO FLAVOUR POINTED FRUITS SEEDS $2.50
Tomato Riesentraube is a traditional heirloom variety from Germany, with its name meaning “giant bunch of grapes” in German. It is thought to have been cultivated since at least the 19th century and was brought to the United States by German immigrants. The variety is well known for its vigorous growth and exceptionally heavy fruit set, producing large clusters of small, cherry-sized red tomatoes with cute pointed ends. It is beloved in home gardens for both its flavour and productivity.
Like other red tomatoes, Riesentraube is rich in lycopene, a potent antioxidant linked to heart health and reduced risk of certain cancers. It also contains high levels of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and dietary fibre. Regular consumption of tomatoes may support immune function, skin health, and reduced inflammation. While not traditionally used in herbal medicine, their nutritional content makes them a valuable addition to a balanced diet.
EDIBILITY
Riesentraube tomatoes are highly sought after for their full-bodied, rich tomato flavour. Slightly larger than most cherry tomatoes, they are sweet with a bit of tang, making them ideal for fresh eating, salads, preserving, or light cooking. Their uniform size and deep red colour make them a favourite for dehydrating or making tomato sauces with a hint of sweetness.
HOW IT GROWS
This is an indeterminate variety, meaning it will continue growing and fruiting over a long season. The plants are strong and tall, requiring support from stakes or cages. They can grow over 1.8 metres in height and are well suited to warm climates. Riesentraube produces dozens of fruit per truss, often forming grape-like bunches. It is considered a robust and reliable plant that performs well even in less-than-ideal conditions.
GROWING FROM SEED
Start seeds indoors about 6–8 weeks before your region’s last frost date. In areas without frost, it can go on producing for many months. You can also sow them any time from early Spring to early summer. Sow seeds around 5 mm deep in a seed-raising mix, keeping the soil moist and warm (ideally 21–24°C). Seeds usually germinate in 7–14 days. Once the seedlings develop their first true leaves, pot them on into larger containers to encourage healthy root development.
Harden off seedlings before transplanting them outdoors by gradually introducing them to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days. Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Plant out with 60–90 cm between plants, and provide sturdy support. Water regularly and mulch to retain moisture. Pinch off side shoots for better airflow and fruit production. With proper care, Riesentraube tomatoes will provide a long and abundant harvest of flavourful fruit right through summer.
