The amazing life and times of the Australian Honeybee.
The life of an Australian honeybee, like honeybees elsewhere, is a fascinating blend of biological precision, cooperation, and division of labour within a highly organised colony. The Australian honeybee is typically Apis mellifera, which is the common species of honeybee introduced to Australia from Europe. This species, known as the Western honeybee, is highly adaptable and has become the predominant honeybee in Australia. Here’s a closer look at each stage of a worker bee’s life cycle:
1. Birth and Development
- Egg: A queen honeybee lays eggs in the hexagonal cells of the hive, usually one per cell. Fertilised eggs develop into female worker bees, while unfertilised eggs become male drones. The egg hatches after about 3 days.
- Larva: After hatching, the bee enters the larval stage. Worker bees feed the larva royal jelly for the first 3 days, then switch to a mix of pollen and honey called “bee bread.” The larva grows rapidly and after 6 days, spins a cocoon around itself.
- Pupa: In the pupal stage, the larva undergoes metamorphosis, developing its wings, legs, eyes, and other adult structures. After about 12 days, the fully developed adult worker bee emerges.
2. Beginning Work
- New worker bees start working almost immediately after emerging, performing lighter tasks as they build up strength. After 1-2 days, they begin cleaning cells, which prepares the hive for new eggs.
- By day 3 to day 10, they start nursing, feeding larvae with royal jelly. This process also helps them learn the scent and behaviours of their colony.
- Around day 10 to day 20, they transition to tasks like wax production, hive construction, and food storage. They begin learning to fly and making brief orientation flights to familiarise themselves with the hive’s surroundings.
- From day 20 onward, they start foraging for nectar, pollen, water, and propolis, now strong enough to handle this demanding task.
3. Learning Process
- Honeybees learn through experience and observation. Orientation flights help them memorise the hive’s location and landscape. During foraging, they learn to identify flower scents, shapes, and the best times of day to forage. They also communicate through a “waggle dance” to convey information about food sources to other bees.
4. Diet
- Nectar: Bees collect nectar as a carbohydrate source, which they convert to honey. Honey fuels their high-energy activities, especially foraging.
- Pollen: This is their protein source, crucial for feeding larvae and producing royal jelly. It also provides vitamins and minerals necessary for their growth and immune health.
- Water: Used for cooling the hive, diluting honey, and feeding larvae.
- Propolis: A resin they collect from plants, which they use to seal hive crevices and protect against bacteria and fungi.
5. Life Span
- A worker bee’s lifespan depends on her role and the season. During peak foraging months, a worker bee typically lives 5-6 weeks because the energy demands of foraging are intense. Bees born in late autumn, however, can live up to 6 months to survive through winter and support the colony in the next spring.
6. Death
- Worker bees generally die after exhausting their energy reserves, particularly in the case of foragers, who often die during a foraging trip. They may also die protecting the hive if they sting an intruder (as the stinger and parts of their abdomen detach, resulting in death).
- Older or weaker bees sometimes leave the hive and die alone, a natural behaviour that prevents disease spread in the colony. Bees in colder climates may also die from harsh conditions or if the hive’s resources are insufficient for survival.
Each bee’s life cycle is an amazing adaptation to the hive’s needs, perfectly balancing individual sacrifice and colony success, with every stage serving the colony’s continuity and health.
