WHAT TO PLANT ON ST PATRICK’S DAY – A LITTLE LUCK FOR YOUR AUTUMN GARDEN
WHAT TO PLANT ON ST PATRICK’S DAY IN AUSTRALIA – A LITTLE GARDEN LUCK ?
St Patrick’s Day always brings thoughts of lush green landscapes, fresh beginnings and the quiet promise of growth. While the tradition of planting on the 17th of March began in the Northern Hemisphere as a signal of spring’s arrival, here in Australia and across the Southern Hemisphere it marks something just as special — the gentle transition into our beautiful autumn growing season.
For many gardeners, this time of year feels like a breath of relief. The intensity of summer begins to ease, the soil is still warm enough for excellent germination, and cooler days create kinder conditions for plants to establish without stress. It’s one of the most forgiving and rewarding times to garden, making St Patrick’s Day a lovely symbolic reminder to step back into the garden and start planting again.
At Wendy’s Garden, we always look forward to this seasonal shift. It’s when we see gardeners rediscover their enthusiasm, dust off seed trays and begin preparing beds for the months ahead. Autumn planting isn’t just practical — it feels hopeful, calm and full of possibility.
Many of the crops traditionally linked with St Patrick’s Day are perfectly suited to Australian autumn conditions. Peas and broad beans are wonderful choices, thriving in the cooler weather ahead while benefiting from the still-warm soil that encourages strong early growth. Onions also perform beautifully when planted now, slowly establishing over winter before rewarding gardeners later in the season.
Leafy greens are another autumn favourite. Lettuce, spinach and silverbeet grow more comfortably once the harsh summer heat fades, producing sweeter, more tender leaves with less stress and bolting. Brassicas such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and kale also appreciate being planted at this time, developing strong growth and excellent flavour as temperatures continue to cool.
Herbs including parsley, coriander and dill settle happily into autumn gardens as well. While folklore often suggests parsley planted on St Patrick’s Day brings good luck, the real magic lies in the seasonal timing — cooler weather simply allows these herbs to thrive with far less effort from the gardener.
St Patrick’s Day is also a beautiful reminder to care not just for what we grow, but for the soil that supports it. This is a perfect time to sow green manure crops, which create a lush green blanket across garden beds, protecting and nourishing the soil while adding valuable organic matter. As these crops are turned back into the earth, they improve structure, retain moisture, encourage beneficial microbial life and, in many cases, naturally boost nitrogen levels. It’s one of the gentlest and most effective ways to prepare for future abundance. I just made up 1.5 kilos of green manure mix! Look it up in the homepage search bar!
This idea of nurturing the soil before expecting a harvest reflects something we deeply believe in at Wendy’s Garden. Healthy gardens begin with healthy soil, patience and a willingness to work alongside nature rather than against it. Whether you are sowing peas, planting leafy greens or improving your beds with green manure, these small seasonal actions build the foundation for stronger plants and more joyful harvests.
More than anything, St Patrick’s Day reminds us that gardening is full of quiet hope. It’s about fresh starts, tiny seeds and the belief that with care and time, beautiful things will grow. The real luck in gardening isn’t chance — it’s planting at the right moment, nurturing the soil and being part of a community that shares the same love for growing.
From all of us at Wendy’s Garden, we hope this St Patrick’s season brings a little green magic into your garden, your soil and your growing journey ??
IT’S TOMATO TIME, AUSTRALIA!
Right now is the perfect moment to start planting tomato seeds all across Australia — the soil is warming, the days are longer, and tomatoes absolutely thrive when started in late spring and early summer. Whether you sow into trays, pots, or straight into your garden beds, your plants will take off fast, grow strongly, and reward you with months and months of delicious fruit.

Cold Weather and Frost: Why It Harms Plants and How to Protect Them!
-
Freezing of Plant Cells: Plants are made up of water-rich cells. When temperatures drop below freezing, the water inside these cells can freeze and form ice crystals. These sharp crystals puncture cell walls, causing the plant tissue to collapse and die.
-
Interrupted Water Flow: Even if the plant itself doesn’t freeze solid, ice in the soil or within stems can block water from moving through the plant. This causes wilting, drying, and eventual death, particularly in soft-stemmed or tropical plants.
-
Sudden Temperature Changes: Some plants can handle steady cold but struggle with sudden drops in temperature, especially after a warm day. This rapid shift gives them no time to adjust, leading to stress or injury.
-
Evergreen Damage: Cold winds and frost can dehydrate evergreen leaves and needles, turning them brown and brittle.
Use frost cloths, old sheets, hessian, shadecloth, or even cardboard boxes to create a barrier between your plants and the cold night air. Cover before sunset and remove the covers in the morning once the temperature has warmed. Make sure the covers don’t rest directly on the plants, as this can cause damage.
It might seem odd, but slightly moist soil retains heat better than dry soil. Watering your garden in the afternoon before a cold night can help keep the ground warmer and protect roots.
A thick layer of mulch (like straw, sugarcane, bark chips, or leaf litter) helps insulate the soil and roots. This is especially useful for protecting perennials and root vegetables.
Bring potted plants indoors or move them to a sheltered area like a porch, shed, or against a warm brick wall. Even a small shift in microclimate can make a big difference.
Individual plants can be protected with DIY cloches made from cut plastic bottles, milk jugs, or clear storage tubs. These act like tiny greenhouses and offer extra warmth overnight.
If your area experiences regular frost, stick with frost-hardy species or varieties bred for cold tolerance. Native Australian plants from alpine or temperate zones often have natural resistance to frost.
It’s best to avoid pruning late in the growing season, as this encourages new tender growth which is especially vulnerable to frost. Wait until spring, after the danger of frost has passed.
Dirt Therapy: Why Gardening is Good for You (and the Planet)
From Wendy’s Garden – Where Joy Grows by the Packet!
Let’s talk about something magical. No, not unicorns—though watching your zucchinis grow overnight does feel like sorcery. We’re talking about gardening. That dirt-under-your-nails, sun-on-your-face, worms-wiggling-happily kind of gardening. Whether you’re growing juicy heirloom tomatoes, cheerful calendulas, or an army of bee-friendly herbs, gardening is more than a hobby—it’s therapy with a watering can. And at Wendy’s Garden, we’re here to make it easier, cheaper, and more joyful than ever.
Plants Don’t Judge, They Just Grow
The best thing about gardening is that your plants don’t care if you’re in your dressing gown or haven’t had your cuppa yet. They only ask for a bit of sunshine, some water, and a kind word now and again. And when they thrive because you made it happen—whether it’s chillies on your balcony or beans climbing your fence—it’s a quiet kind of magic.
Your Garden, Your Rules
You don’t need a mansion or a tractor to grow food or flowers. A pot on the patio, a corner of the backyard, or even a sunny windowsill is enough to get started. Grow what makes you smile—like our funky-coloured carrots, spiralling cucumbers, or sunflowers taller than your teenager. Go wild. Go weird. Grow happy.
It’s Basically a Gym With Tomatoes
Gardening is sneaky exercise. You bend, dig, haul, reach—and unlike the gym, you don’t pay for a membership and you don’t have to listen to techno remixes of ‘Eye of the Tiger’. Instead, you get fresh air, sunlight, and dinner straight from the soil. At Wendy’s Garden, we reckon lifting a bag of compost should count as strength training.
Dirt is the New Prozac
This one’s backed by science: digging in the dirt makes you feel better. There’s a helpful little soil microbe called Mycobacterium vaccae that acts like nature’s antidepressant. No prescription required—just some seeds, a trowel, and maybe a cheeky dance around the garden while no one’s watching.
Gardening is the Ultimate Act of Hope
Planting a seed is saying, “I believe in tomorrow.” Whether it’s a bed full of silverbeet or a packet of forget-me-nots, gardening is patient, hopeful, and joyfully defiant in a world that moves too fast. And when those first little leaves pop up? It’s like nature’s way of giving you a high five.
The World Needs More Gardeners (and More Bees)
Every garden, no matter how small, helps pollinators, cools the earth, and adds beauty to your bit of the world. Growing from seed is especially planet-friendly, and when you buy from www.wendysgarden.com.au, you’re supporting a small Aussie business that hires people with disabilities and sells seeds from just 10 cents a pack.
We’ve got something for every garden—cool season crops, bee-friendly flowers, rare heirlooms, easy kid-friendly plants, and so much more. We even offer Afterpay, Klarna and Paypal Pay in 4 to make growing your garden easier than ever.
So, Dig In
Start with basil in a pot or go full jungle with climbing beans and passionfruit. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned green thumb, we’ve got the seeds, the tools, and the cheer squad (that’s us!) to help you grow something wonderful.
Because when we grow gardens, we grow joy.
And Wendy’s Garden is here to help you grow both.
