BILLY BUTTONS CRASPEDIA NATIVE POM POMS OF COLOUR! EVERLASTING FLOWERS DROUGHT TOLERANT $2.80
Billy Buttons, scientifically known as Craspedia spp., is a striking Australian native plant known for its bright yellow, spherical flower heads that resemble buttons, giving it its common name! These plants belong to the Asteraceae family and are found primarily across southern and eastern Australia, including regions like Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania. They typically grow in open woodlands, grasslands, and coastal areas, thriving in well-drained soils with good sun exposure.
Billy Buttons are perennial herbs that can reach heights of around 30 to 70 centimetres. They have narrow, grass-like leaves and sturdy, single stems that support the distinctive, golden yellow flower heads. The flowers bloom during late spring to early summer, and their unique appearance has made them popular in native gardens and floral arrangements. Despite their delicate look, they are hardy plants, able to withstand dry conditions once established.
How to grow from seeds:
Before sowing, it’s helpful to scarify the seeds by gently rubbing them between two pieces of sandpaper or soaking them in warm water for a few hours. This mimics the natural conditions that break the seed coat and encourages germination.
To sow the seeds, fill a seed tray or shallow container with a light, well-draining potting mix, preferably one designed for Australian natives or a mix of sand, peat, and compost. Lightly press the seeds into the surface of the soil but don’t bury them, as they need light to germinate.
Place the seed tray in a warm, sunny spot, as Billy Buttons need plenty of light and warmth to sprout. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the germination process, which typically takes two to three weeks.
Once the seedlings emerge and grow large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into individual pots or directly into the garden. If planting them in the ground, choose a sunny location with well-drained soil, as Billy Buttons prefer these conditions. They are tolerant of dry spells once established, but regular watering in the first few months will help them settle in. For a thriving garden, space the plants around 30 centimetres apart to allow them room to grow and develop.
Billy Buttons require minimal maintenance once established. You can cut back the spent flower heads after blooming to encourage a tidy appearance, but be careful not to disturb the plant too much. As long as they receive plenty of sunlight and occasional watering, these resilient plants will thrive, adding a unique and cheerful pop of colour to Australian gardens!
