Cardinal Climber (Ipomoea Quamoclit Cardinalis) is an easy-to-grow annual vine, perfect for attracting nectar-feeding birds! Ideal for arbours, trellises, fences, and posts, this vine will thrive from seeds planted almost anywhere. Growing from Ipomoea Quamoclit Cardinalis seeds, it produces vibrant red, trumpet-shaped flowers and is low-maintenance. A favourite of nectar-feeding birds, the Cardinal Climber adds a splash of colour and vertical interest to your summer garden. Its palm-like leaves provide a striking backdrop to the 2.5 cm dark red blooms that appear from early summer.
Soak Cardinal Climber flower seeds overnight before planting. Plant now. Cover with 1/4 inch of soil and keep moist until germination. Seeds can also be started directly outdoors. If planting outdoors, sow the flower seeds after soil has warmed.
Grow Notes
Prefers part sun, dappled light or full sun with some protection in the late afternoon in hot areas. Mulch each year and plant in well-draining rich soil.
Sow
In spring, wait until temperatures are above 10°C both day and night before planting seeds in full sun in ordinary garden soil 10-15cms apart and 1.5cms deep. Firm soil over seeds and keep evenly moist but not wet.
