Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is used as a tea for upset stomach, ulcers, heavy menstrual periods, diarrhea, bloody urine, persistent cough, painful breathing (pleuritis), bronchitis, cancer, and chest pain (angina). It is also used as a gargle for gum disease and sore throat. Comfrey is applied to the skin for ulcers, wounds, joint inflammation, bruises, rheumatoid arthritis, swollen veins (phlebitis), gout, and fractures.

The flowers are an excellent bee forage. The whole plant is an excellent soil conditioner. The leaves are a useful addition to compost. It has bell-shaped red-violet or yellowish flowers. It may contain small amounts of toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids.

Grow Notes
Plant in part or full sun, moist soil.

Sow
Raise as seedlings in Spring and Autumn, by planting seeds 5mm deep and at 60cm spacing when transplanted.

Keep soil moist but never wet.

Germination
25-30 days at 20-22°C. Comfrey can be slow to germinate. Take note of the expected germination time, be patient and follow the recommended depth and temperature guidelines closely for the best chances of success.
