COSMOS CUPCAKES MIXED COLOURS CUT AND COME AGAIN FLOWERS ATTRACTS BIRDS AND BUTTERFLIES! $2.70
Cosmos Cupcakes (Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Cupcakes’) is a unique and whimsical variety of cosmos known for its large, cupped petals that resemble delicate cupcake wrappers. This charming annual was developed through natural selection from the standard Cosmos bipinnatus species, which is native to Mexico and was introduced to European and American gardens in the 18th century. The Cupcakes variety originated from a gardener’s discovery of a petal mutation, which was then selectively bred for its unusual fluted and fused petal shape.
Historically, cosmos flowers were grown for their ornamental beauty, particularly in cottage and wildflower-style gardens. While not commonly used medicinally, some cultures valued cosmos species for their mild calming effects when brewed as herbal tea. In modern gardens, cosmos are beloved for their ability to attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects, making them valuable companions in vegetable and flower beds alike.
Cosmos Cupcakes grows up to 90–120 cm tall with finely cut, feathery foliage and sturdy stems that hold up large, open-faced blooms. The flowers appear in shades of white, pink, and rose, with each bloom featuring delicately fluted or fused petals that curl upward like the edges of a cupcake paper. The effect is airy, romantic, and delightfully unusual—perfect for cutting gardens, flower borders, and pollinator-friendly plantings.
To grow from seed:
Sow directly into the garden in spring after the danger of frost has passed, or start indoors 4–6 weeks earlier. In most of Australia, sow between August and November, depending on your local climate.
Choose a sunny position and well-drained soil, and sow seeds about 5 mm deep. Keep the soil moist during germination, which typically occurs in 7–10 days.
Once seedlings are about 10–15 cm tall, thin or transplant them to 30 cm apart.
Cosmos Cupcakes thrives in full sun and does best in moderately fertile soil. Avoid overfeeding, as excessive nitrogen will encourage leaf growth over flowers. Deadheading spent blooms will keep the plants flowering for months, often from late spring right through to autumn. These plants are drought-tolerant once established and generally pest-free, making them ideal for beginner gardeners or low-maintenance flower beds.
With their graceful, lacy foliage and quirky, show-stopping blooms, Cosmos Cupcakes adds a playful yet elegant touch to the garden, offering long-lasting colour, pollinator appeal, and cut flowers that look like they belong in a fairy tale bouquet!
