Dracaena draco – Dragon Tree
The Tree That Bleeds Red – Rare, Ancient, Stunning
Add some myth and magic to your garden with Dracaena draco, the legendary Dragon Tree. Native to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and parts of Morocco, this slow-growing, sculptural tree has been prized for centuries—not just for its striking umbrella-like shape, but for its mysterious red sap, known as Dragon’s Blood.
Used since ancient times in traditional medicine, incense, varnishes, and even medieval dyes, Dragon’s Blood was believed to heal wounds, strengthen the heart, and protect against evil. While not commonly used in modern medicine, it still holds cultural and historical importance and remains a prized natural resin.
Growing Dracaena draco from seed is a slow and rewarding journey. These hardy trees live for hundreds of years and eventually form thick, branching trunks with dramatic architectural flair. In pots or the garden, they make outstanding statement plants.
How to grow from seed:
Start in spring or early summer. Soak seeds in warm water for 1–2 days to soften the hard shell. Use a free-draining cactus or succulent mix and sow seeds about 5–10 mm deep. Keep warm (22–28°C) and moist but not soggy. Germination can take 3 to 6 weeks, sometimes longer. Seedlings are slow-growing but incredibly hardy once established. Protect from frost while young.
Perfect for pots, dry gardens, and collectors of rare and unusual plants. Give it sun, good drainage, and patience—and you’ll have a living legend growing at home!
Available now in limited quantities. Rare. Ancient. Worth the wait!
