Four o’clocks, also known as Marvel of Peru and botanically named Mirabilis jalapa, are a foolproof addition to any garden. These plants offer a stunning array of colors and stripes on their flowers, making them a visual delight. Though often treated as annuals, they develop fleshy tubers and can return year after year.

Growing to a manageable height of 2 to 3 feet, four o’clocks boast flowers in a fascinating variety of colors, including marbled bi-colors. Their name comes from their habit of opening in the late afternoon and staying open into the night. Sweetly scented, they attract honey eaters, butterflies, and even hummingbirds. Remarkably, the same plant can produce flowers in several different shades.

Grow Notes
Four o’clocks thrive in full sun but will also tolerate some shade. Like many plants, they prefer fertile, well-drained soil, but are tolerant of a wide range of conditions. They flourish in the heat of summer.

Sow
Sow direct or raise seedlings in Spring or after frost, at a depth of 20mm, with 50cm plant spacing.

Keep soil moist, not wet.
