GERANIUM APACHE STAR EASY GROWER PLANT ANYTIME OF THE YEAR $2.30
Geranium ‘Apache Star’ is an eye-catching variety known for its flowers that bring a striking contrast to gardens and pots. This variety was selectively bred from species of Pelargonium, originally native to South Africa, where wild geraniums naturally thrive in rocky, well-drained soils and sunny locations. ‘Apache Star’ was developed to combine vibrant colours with resilience, making it an ideal choice for both ornamental displays and borders.
To grow Geranium ‘Apache Star’ from seed, start in early spring if growing outdoors, or in late winter indoors to get a head start on the season. Begin by preparing seed trays or small pots with a quality, well-draining seed-raising mix, as geranium seeds need a light and airy medium for optimal growth. Press each seed lightly into the soil, covering it with a thin layer no deeper than 3 mm. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, as excess water can lead to rotting. Geranium seeds germinate best in warm conditions, so aim for a temperature range of 20°C to 25°C. Germination should occur within 7 to 21 days under these conditions.
Once the seedlings have developed their true leaves, they can be transplanted carefully into larger pots or directly into the garden. Geraniums prefer a full sun position, though some afternoon shade is helpful in hotter Australian regions. They thrive in well-draining, neutral to slightly acidic soil with a loamy or sandy texture. Regular but moderate watering is ideal, especially during dry spells, while ensuring that the soil does not become waterlogged to avoid root rot. Adding a balanced, slow-release fertiliser every four to six weeks during the growing season will support vigorous growth and plentiful flowering.
To keep ‘Apache Star’ blooming, regularly deadhead any spent flowers and remove yellowing leaves, which will encourage fresh growth and help prevent fungal issues. In frost-free areas, this geranium may be grown as a perennial, providing colour year after year, while in colder climates, it is typically grown as an annual. With minimal maintenance, ‘Apache Star’ will reward gardeners with its vibrant, starry blooms throughout the warmer months!
