MILLET JAPANESE ECHINOCHLOA ESCULENTA ANNUAL FORAGE FEED FOR HUMANS, CATTLE, HORSES AND BIRDS $1.30
Japanese Millet (Echinochloa esculenta) is a fast-growing, warm-season grass originally bred in East Asia. It’s part of the millet family and is especially popular in Japan, China and Korea. Though it’s been around for thousands of years, it’s now grown all over the world — including right here in Australia.
Japanese Millet was domesticated in Japan from wild millet species. It’s been a staple crop for centuries in Asian countries, and thanks to its ability to grow quickly and thrive in hot weather, it has spread globally as a reliable and versatile summer crop.
Health Benefits
Japanese Millet is naturally gluten-free and packed with nutrients. It offers:
Protein – helps with tissue repair and keeping you feeling full
Fibre – supports digestion and gut health
Magnesium and phosphorus – essential for strong bones and energy production
Antioxidants – may help reduce inflammation in the body
While humans can eat it (especially in porridges or flour), it’s most commonly used as animal feed in Australia. Chickens, ducks, horses and cattle all enjoy it and it’s particularly helpful for promoting healthy weight gain in livestock.
What is it used for?
Japanese Millet is a bit of a multi-tasker. It can be used for:
Livestock fodder – great as grazing or cut-and-carry feed
Hay or silage – excellent for emergency feed in dry conditions
Birdseed – poultry and wild birds love the seeds
Cover cropping – protects soil, suppresses weeds, and improves structure
Green manure – adds organic matter back into the soil when turned in
How to Grow Japanese Millet – Step by Step
When to plant:
Plant once the soil is consistently warm, around late spring to early summer. Soil temperatures should be at least 16–18°C.
Where to plant:
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. It grows well in sandy, loamy or clay soils, but doesn’t like soggy conditions.
How to sow:
Clear the area of weeds. Broadcast seeds (throw them around the area you will use). Lightly rake or press seeds into the soil – they only need to be 1–2 cm deep.
Water well and keep moist during early growth.
Watering:
Water regularly, especially during dry spells. While it’s somewhat drought-tolerant, consistent moisture gives the best results.
Growth time:
You’ll see shoots within days, and it will be ready to graze or cut in 6–8 weeks. If grazing, let it grow to about 30 cm tall and allow animals to graze it down to 10–15 cm before giving it a rest.
