A very well-known globe-shaped heirloom onion that reaches really huge size? 2.5 KILOS is rather common! The skin is a pale yellow and the flesh is relatively mild and sweet, so is recommended for fresh use, not a storage type, leave in the ground to grow while you use them.
Introduced in 1887 by David Murray, gardener for the Marquis of Ailsa, at Culzean Castle in Maybole, South Ayrshire, Scotland. Up to 15 kilos for one onion! Pics are real!
Grow Notes
Prefers full sun in well-draining soil. Needs some cold nights/days.
Sow
Sow direct or raise seedlings in Autumn and Winter, by planting seeds at a depth of 5mm, with 15cm plants spacing and 30cm between rows.
Keep soil moist, not wet.
