PASSIONFRUIT SWEETHEART RED PASSIFLORA SWEET FRUIT AND STUNNING FLOWERS $2.70

Passiflora ‘Sweetheart’ is a stunning passionfruit variety grown for its gorgeous flowers and sweet, aromatic fruit. A member of the Passifloraceae family, it combines ornamental beauty with productivity, producing glossy green leaves, intricate blooms, and delicious fruit. Like other passionfruit, it is native to South America, where species of Passiflora grow in tropical and subtropical regions.

Nutrients and Edibility
The fruit of Passiflora ‘Sweetheart’ is both beautiful and nutritious. It contains high levels of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, dietary fibre, and antioxidants, all of which help support immunity and general wellbeing. The pulp is fragrant, tangy, and sweet – ideal for eating fresh, stirring into yoghurt, making desserts, or blending into drinks. The seeds are edible and add a pleasant crunch.

Besides being a productive fruiting vine, Passiflora ‘Sweetheart’ is often grown for its large, exotic flowers, which feature a spectacular mix of purple, white, and blue tones. These blooms are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, making the plant a valuable addition to pollinator-friendly gardens. The lush foliage also provides quick cover for fences, pergolas, and trellises, offering both shade and privacy.

How it Grows
Passiflora ‘Sweetheart’ is a vigorous climbing vine that can reach up to 5–6 metres long with support. It prefers full sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil. The plant flowers in warm weather, followed by round to oval fruit that ripens to deep purple when ready to pick. It is best suited to frost-free or subtropical climates but can be grown in large pots and protected during cold weather in cooler regions.

How to Grow From Seed:

Sow seeds in spring or early summer. To improve germination, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting.

Plant about 1 cm deep in seed-raising mix and keep the soil moist and warm, around 20–25°C.

Germination can take 2–6 weeks.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into larger pots and then into the garden once the weather is warm and settled.

Provide a strong trellis or fence for support. Regular watering and feeding during the growing season will ensure healthy vines and abundant fruit. Mulch well to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
