The Panama Red passionfruit is a self-pollinating variety, capable of producing abundant fruit on a single vine. This hardy, vigorous plant bears large, red-skinned fruits with a sweet, delicious flavour and is known for its heavy cropping. If your current passionfruit plants aren’t producing, Panama Red might be the ideal choice, as it doesn’t require a second plant for pollination.
Perfect as a natural screen, the Panama Red vine is excellent for covering fences, sheds, or other structures. With lush green foliage, it can cover up to 8 square metres annually. The fruit itself is large, soft-skinned, and red, with juicy, aromatic pulp that is milder than the tangy black passionfruit. Expect approximately 100 to 150 fruits each season.
Plant in a sunny, well-drained area and expect flowers from spring with fruit from summer until autumn.
