PAW PAW PAPAYA ORANGE SUCCULENT FRUITS ON A SMALL TREE! PROLIFIC PRODUCER! $2.30 $1.99

The Paw Paw tree commonly grown in Australia refers to Carica papaya, a fast-growing tropical fruit tree that originates from Central America and southern Mexico. It has been cultivated for centuries in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide and was introduced to Australia where it now thrives, especially in the northern states like Queensland and parts of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. In Australia, the term “paw paw” is often used interchangeably with “papaya,” though some growers differentiate between red-fleshed papaya and yellow-fleshed paw paw.

Paw paw is highly valued for its health benefits. It contains the digestive enzyme papain, which aids in breaking down proteins and improving digestion. It is rich in vitamins A, C and E, as well as folate and potassium. The fruit is considered anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich, promoting immune health and skin repair. The seeds are sometimes used in traditional medicine for their antibacterial properties, although they can be slightly bitter and are not typically eaten in large amounts.

The paw paw fruit is edible when ripe. The sweet, juicy flesh can be orange, pink or yellow depending on the variety, and is eaten fresh, in salads, or blended into smoothies and desserts. The seeds are technically edible but have a peppery flavour and are usually discarded. Even the green (unripe) paw paw is edible when cooked and is used in some Southeast Asian cuisines. The young leaves can also be steamed or used medicinally in teas, but caution should be taken as very high doses may have adverse effects.

HOW IT GROWS
Paw paw trees are short-lived but fast-growing and can start producing fruit within 12–18 months from seed. They prefer warm, frost-free climates with plenty of sunlight and grow best in well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. They can reach up to 3–5 metres tall and need protection from strong winds.

Regular watering is important, especially during flowering and fruiting, but the roots do not tolerate soggy soil. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool.

HOW TO GROW IT FROM SEED

Sow seeds directly into pots or trays filled with seed-raising mix. Sow them about 1 cm deep and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Seeds will typically germinate in 2 to 5 weeks depending on warmth and moisture levels. Ideal germination temperature is around 25 to 30°C.

Once seedlings have developed a few true leaves and are about 15–20 cm tall, transplant them to their final position in full sun. Space trees at least 2–3 metres apart. Protect young plants from cold, wind and root disturbance. Feed regularly with a balanced fertiliser and water deeply during dry periods.

With proper care, your paw paw tree will reward you with large, tropical fruit and lush foliage, making it both a productive and attractive addition to your garden!
