SUNFLOWER LILAC SPRAY RARE MYSTICAL NO POLLEN SEEDS COMPACT $2.50
Sunflower ‘Compact Lilac Spray’ is a unique twist on the classic sunflower – compact in size, multi-branching, and topped with soft lilac-toned blooms that are a delight in the garden. Unlike the towering giants most people imagine, this variety is bred to stay neat and bushy, making it perfect for smaller gardens, pots, or borders where space is limited but you still want the cheerful presence of sunflowers!
This sunflower stays smaller than standard types, generally reaching 60–90 cm tall. It produces multiple branches, each topped with lilac-shaded daisy-like flowers. Plants thrive in full sun, in rich, free-draining soil, and because they’re bushy and compact, they rarely need staking. They flower from mid-summer through to early autumn, keeping the garden colourful for weeks on end. Some will be rich lilac, some a mixture of lilac and cream etc.
Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are native to North America, where they were cultivated by Indigenous peoples thousands of years ago for food, oil, and ornamental use. Modern compact varieties like ‘Lilac Spray’ were developed more recently by breeders to suit urban gardens and to offer new colour options beyond the traditional golden yellow.
Like all sunflowers, the seeds of ‘Compact Lilac Spray’ are edible and packed with protein, healthy fats, vitamin E, magnesium, and selenium. They’re excellent for snacking, adding to baking, or feeding to birds. The flowers themselves are fantastic as cut blooms, lasting well in vases and adding a soft pastel tone to arrangements. In the garden, the plants provide nectar for bees and pollen for other beneficial insects.
How to Grow From Seed: Sow seeds directly into the garden in spring once the soil has warmed and frosts are past. Plant them about 2–3 cm deep and space them 30–40 cm apart. For an earlier start, you can sow in pots indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting.
Keep the soil moist during germination, which usually takes 7–10 days. Give the plants a sunny position and water regularly as they establish.
They don’t need heavy feeding – a balanced fertiliser every few weeks is plenty. Pinching out the very first bud can encourage more branching for an even better flower display. Keep picking flowers or deadheading spent blooms to extend the season.
Seed collecting from Lilac Spray is like a pot luck! The seeds may not breed true but you may also get something really special!
